Demersal Jigging(Drag Setting and Line)

Howdy folks, to keep things short and sweet and help others in the process what do you guys use for your light jigging setup:

  • How big is your line?
  • How much drag do you run?
  • How much line roughly on your reel?

Depending on setup, 20lb or 30lb and 3kg/5kg.

Always good to set it during scales for demersal jigging IMO. I know much much I can put through a rod, and know how it loads up and what the line and knots can handle, so dont mind playing around with the drag on most setups, but sucks having a heap of $$'s worth of gear 2m from the bottom, having a dhuie smash it and loosing your expensive jig because you didnt have your drag set right from the start. Dont always have the luxury of being able to fiddle with the drag before you're pinged off, and I prefer using lighter lines pushed to the limit, rather than have a heap of capacity not used. Not so much a problem with heavier line or sambo jigging though.

All personal preferences of course though.

after getting bust off numerous times on 20lb daiwa surf braid , i went with 30lb

drag done up tightish so i suppose 5kg .lever them off the bottom try not to give em any room as your in danger of getting bricked.

and wouldn't have a clue what the drag is, and couldn't care really. I have it set "fairly tight" and then if the fish is taking line I nudge the lever drag forward a bit. Its not rocket science, in reality the drag will not be strong enough to break your braid or buckle the rod so why fart around setting it with scales and shit? Just tension it and pull line off by hand - you'll know if the drag is right or not.

Trolling for marlin, yeah set your drag with scales - but to jig some bloody dhuies or pinks off the bottom its a waste of time IMO.

I myself hardly scale the drag and have gotten use to feeling the drag by hand and do what i think is right, but not everyone is the same 1kg drag to you might feel like 4-5kg to them as a rough example, however if you know your reel only puts out like 5kg max drag and you use braid larger then it, kinda takes all the guess work out of it.

But PE3 varivas is 50lb, you could skull drag them if you wanted :p. Plus you're running a lever drag reel. Plus you're using a lever drag reel which gives you the luxury of a calibrated drag setting.

Only takes 10 seconds to set up for the whole day though. I'll take 10 seconds over loosing a $25 jig or having to run too heavy braid so I have a heap of wiggle room :p

I also have a spinning outfit

Fri, 2010-10-15 15:08

with 20lb sunline on a Branzino. I dont pull that through a scale either.

You'll lose jigs, thats life. I'd rather stare at the sun than waste my time setting a drag to jig with, its a load of wank.

My PE4 outfit is pulling

Fri, 2010-10-15 13:10

My PE4 outfit is pulling about 8kg ATM and I overfilled the spool I have 350m of PE4 on it, should really have only used 300m.

My PE2 outfit has 300m of 15lb, breaks 20lbish, probably 3kgish of drag?
