Dawai Pirate Jiggs , Evergreen Caprice jiggs, and Fanky Jiggs Help/ Discussion

Hi Guys

Recently i have seen the success of these jiggs on our demersal fish species on the west coast. And was curious as to wether these jiggs are worth the price. I have never really had much success on jiggs at all , and iv tried octojigs , lucanas jiggs , and some asorted soft plastics which have gotton me black arse skippy and wrasse. What depth are suited to the jiggs such as pirate jigs evergreen and fanky jigs, and where is the best place to look and buy such jigs. Also what types of jigg techs are used to get the most attention from fish. My jigging style is usualy a fast flick / twitch up , and a slow flutter or lowering the rod back down. Also how far from the bottom is the jig best placed ? 1metre / 2metre. And also some recomended set ups in term of overhead setup / spinning setup and rod and line weight class. I know its heaps to take in and sorry for all the questions just i am very keen to land a nice sized demersal on a jigg and i want the challenge.  Any help would be much appreciated cheers guys.

Im not sure if it helps but a couple of reels I have that im not using alot is a plueger contender and  dawai regal 4000 .

if you use the search function, and look for demersal jigging , you'll find all your questions answered.

If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Definitely worth the money. A

Definitely worth the money. A lot cheaper than buying bait and way more productive. One jig can last many trips and is the same price as a block of squid.

As for action with those jigs, the main thing is to keep it slow, let the jigs natural action do the work.

not a bad question DhuBoi ..

not a bad question DhuBoi .. some of the jigs you have mentioned ive never tried but i use SP and zest style metals .. the faster twitch and drop are what i use but with the odd extra wind up to 3-4m with a  heavy pause and then drop to the botom, twitch very lightly again and pause .. usually your going to get hit on the long drop ..

ive tried the octa jigs but not much luck with those, i prefer the faster action of the knife style jigs and SP ..

as for gear, the 4000 size reels and pe2-3 are great with nice soft rods .. and here lies the problem for me .. its more about the gear than the teqnique . ive had friends on my boat jigging with big spheros reels and broomsticks and it just doesnt work. sure they might get the very odd fish but they might as well soak a bait as it will be more productive, big heavy gear is a pain when jigging demersals . my main two combo's are a daiwa certate H/C 4000 with a cheap europro pe1-3 running pe2 (this is my favorite combo) my new hevier setup is a shimano talica 8 single speed on a daiwa demonblood p2-4 running pe4

best thing i can also reccomend .. get out on a boat with some of the other jiggers like honsu and jamie .. youll learn more in 30 minutes with them than you will learn by yourself in a year.

I find jigs/plastics most

Thu, 2011-03-03 21:44

I find jigs/plastics most useful when the fish don't want bait. Only caught baldies on bait on monday but plenty of dhus on lures.

 Just spent 3 days last

Fri, 2011-03-04 08:31

Just spent 3 days last weekend in Jurien with a group of guys, I jigged while they all mostly bait fished. The fishing was quite slow and I found myself doubting the jigs, but then the bait guys really weren't pulling in much either. Its hard to persist sometimes but when you catch something it's more often something good. I did end up catching plenty of fish on the jigs, Dhuie's, Black ass, Snapper... and also a Cuttlefish, and had a big mack come through as I was bringing my jig in under the boat and bit me clean off. Was using all sorts of jigs and they all caught. Nice big lift and slow flutter back down is my technique and you'll always get hit on the drop. Was using a Stradic Ci4 2500 with PE1 on a Jewel rod for the lightest jigs and plastics and a Saragosa 5000 with PE2.5 on a Xzoga PE3 rod for the rest.

Keep at it mate, you'll have your day when the jigs clean up! Can anyone confirm the idea that jigs seem to get hit more in winter than summer? Was talking to Whitey about this on the weekend. He said the jigs haven't been as successful lately possibly due to the warmer water and more bait fish around meaning the fish have got it easy getting a feed and don't wanna hit the jigs as much. Last time I was up with him late winter the jigs were getting smashed!
