Cray pot floats?
Gday,
Does anyone know the legalities of craypot floats other than you have to have them?
My problem is I can find plenty of places to put my pots in off the reef in front of my house but being nearly holiday time the chance of them being there the next day isn't real good with all the campers.
What would happen if put my pots in at low tide without a rope or float. (just an identification tag done to the correct specs)
Or a float on a real short rope that technically doesn't float?
The main reason for floats is for identification right, and your own benefit of course.
Whats your thoughts........I just reckon if Im the only one who knows were they are and they are licenced and to spec it should be ok????
Or do you just put a small piece of broken rope on it and explain it must have been cut?????
Cheers

Im pretty sure they would say
Im pretty sure they would say its illegal.........Ive never known a government organisation to be flexible or show much common sense yet! LOL (fisheries are probably one of the better I must admit)
Id rather hear form someone who has tried something similar and found out.
Probably not morally right, but I would rather pay a $50 fine if caught than $100 every time my pot gets stolen for example......

I feel your pain. I tried to
I feel your pain. I tried to pot for a season and lost 2 pots and gave up. Whats the point of a short cut rope but means you would have to dive on it?
May as well just dive for crays its better anyway.
Any float close enough hook underwater qould be very dangerous to other boats ?

The places Im talking about
The places Im talking about is a reef that comes off the shore with some nice deep holes in it. I can walk out on it to pull the pots from the holes or off the end.....the short cut rope is where my float might have been if questioned.......(know what I mean)
If a boat come in contact with my rope he would have a lot bigger problems than my rope....LOL

if you can walk out to the spot then why waste your time with a pot, a set of googles and a breath of air sounds the way to go

from the rules-only takes a
from the rules-only takes a minute to look it up yourself instead of second hand knowledge
The reasons are quite obvious unfortunately-you could drop 100 pots and no one would know.

hairy onemate , if your
hairy one
mate , if your going to chuck pots in off a reef ledge/hole then id suggest a few things to you
first it will need a legal float and your id on so you wont get busted when you try to pull
it
anything else is going to have you neck deep in it quick
second, id suggest you use stick pots , as they are not as easy to get jammed in reef holes , if you cant get stick pots then use very heavy barrel shaped placcys with lots of weight in em
3 stick pots for sale here below, bit of work and there good to go
cheap at the price
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/kewdale/fishing/3-round-cray-pots-baskets/1063459956
id also suggest you run your cray pot rope through some 3/4 inch garden hose, at least the bit that is at the bridle end on the pot and where it will chaffe on the reef you want to tie it off to , you can either tie it to a small hole in the reef , or just keep the rope short and let it float where it will so long as you can get it at low tide,
'the 3/4 garden hose will protect your ropes from chaffing badly in the constant wash , which can take its toll even on cray rope very quickly
id recommend checking them at low tide/swell times as well
there is nothing illegal about doing it this way , however it isn't an easy method as you have to cart the pot to wherever your reef ledge/hole is , and sometimes getting to them is hard yakka , it usually involves a bit of hard leg work , large wheeled fridge trolley is not a bad tool for this though , lol depending on where your reef hole is of course ,
understand if you can get to them so can others , so you must go early always or expect to have some level of interference , most peeps wont steal em like this ,too much work involved lol but they do like to dive/swim on them , which is also not illegal , same as any other pot etc
you can do ok , but it is easier with a boat
