Crash on Indian Ocean drive
Submitted by sea-kem on Mon, 2017-04-17 18:17
Well this doesn't surprise me at all, the shit I see on my drives to Seabird are fucking astounding. And I can recount at half a dozen circumstances of being overtaken on double white lines. These absolute morons think there is no reason for them being there, oh and the last one was a Doric work ute. I think sheer luck has been the only factor that there hasn't been more carnage and death on that road. I usually sit back and let the idiots that think they'll get where they're going 5 minutes faster go for it, I'm not getting sucked into their stupid life choices.

See the same sort of stuff
On Great Eatern regularly. Plenty of slow learners on the road with the "never happen to me attitude".

I steer clear of that road
I steer clear of that road whenever I can. It's a shocker. Much rather take the brand. Only drawback is there is much more wildlife on the brand than their ever used to be.

Me too
One too many near misses for me, and it's often clogged with boats and caravans, and nowhere to pass. Brand for me every time, and trucks? Trucks are no problem if there aren't ten cars piled up behind, and nowadays, there aren't.

Yep the brand for me. There
Yep the brand for me. There is only about 5kays difference if I go either Indian Ocean Drive or the Brand hwy from Dongara from where I live. I prefer to mess with the trucks than grey nomads or holiday makers any day.
I just come down the Carnarvon Mullewa road on Sunday and Monday and it was great. I wasn't towing anything and only saw about 6 cars coming the other way. Nice drive home especially when double dermeritts were on the cards. Even threw Minginew, Coorow and Moora it was great. The GNH was crap once I was on there

Agree that road is far to narrow and windy especially with grey nomads coming opposite direction with massive campers half a foot over the white lines.

Couldn't work out why we
Couldn't work out why we were sitting ten cars back behind a newish Pajero only doing 80 km in a 110 zone between seabird and lanno on good Friday. After watching people overtaking on some hairy corners I finally got a chance to get past, only to discover it was a learner driver and she only had her front plate up. Her old man should be horse whipped for that kind of crap on the busiest day of the year

It's more so the overtaking lanes between Capel and Busselton. But I don't think it will happen. Pretty stupid idea.

As an addendum to my initial
As an addendum to my initial comments, this is actually a good road when it's not busy. The new stretch north of Lano is very good and I've done it a few times now heading north early morning before the greys are up and about. I'm pretty sure the old stretch north of Leeman is due for upgrade sometime soon, and I love looking at that bit of coast where a mate of mine had a shack 20 years ago.

Off subject slightly but went
Off subject slightly but went to Augusta 2 weeks ago and Sues Road is one of the best country roads without median seperation going around.
Literally set my cruise control and only had to steer the car for the entire length except for the mandatory roadworks and speed zone changes.

That's because the road was
That's because the road was built by BHP as a haul road from a mineral sands mine just off the Brockman Hwy. They spent millions on that road then the mine closed early due to acid soils.

Love the GOR and while I've
Love the GOR and while I've certainly seen some clowns, it's no more than elsewhere.
Bugger the Brand, driving 4 hrs with nothing to see except a line of scrub each side.
Grey army? There's nothing more inevitable than that's our future if not in a pine box.
Most of the GOR has plenty of area to pass if in a rush.

Are you referring to the Indian Ocean Drive still?
The bit that joined up Cervantes and Lancelin is good, and you can actually see some ocean...for a short while..then you are back to looking at coastal scrub, which I would claim is a lot more boring than the scenic vistas of the
Brand, paricularly north of Cataby. And to get to that, you have to drive at 90 for what seems forever, before getting on the old Cervantes road, and everything mentioned above. As for the tiny glimpses you get north of Leeman, I consider that a death trap, as I had the closest call I have had in my entire life somewhere near Nobby Head last year due to a fucking rubbernecking backpacker pair in a camper. I really shouldn't be here now to type this, so my negative feelings towards that road are stronger than ever. Haven't been on it since. I always have a good fast run up the Brand, and take note of the greatly increased traffic density on the highway once you are north of the Cliff head turnoff.
But please, those of you who love the IOD, please continue to use it, makes the Brand better

Calling it
Done several trips up and down the Indian Ocean Drive recently, including a late night run last night. I love it.
Before it was built any northern trip involved a trip up the Brand, I'll always remember the catch cry when we hit the T junction near Dongara, "survived the brand again".
You stick to the Brand ranmar.

Yes , idiots everywhere
But when you have a winding, very narrow, mostly poorly maintained piece of bitumen, then add the "ooh, look, a glimpse of ocean!" factor, well...We'll just have to agree to disagree. Higher accident rate than the Brand since it was opened, I'd rather share the road with professionals than bloody rubberneckers.

Dumper i totally disagree
Dumper i totally disagree with your comments mate....
L plates up or no L plates up if someone feels they want to sit on 80km/hr then thats up to them....
What difference does it make to the passing cars? Should they treat said car differently because its an L plater or should they just treat them with the same respect and be courteous as you go past?
They might just actually not be in a hurry and want to soak in the scenerey and cruise on the busiest day of the year as you stated....
I bet there will be people here that will whinge and whine about my comment but those same people probably dont see an issue with someone towing a 7mtr boat and doing same.... Same roads but different rules apply should they?
People need to slow their lives down and to quote Sea-Kem from the start of this, too many lane swapping dickheads fly you bye only to be still at the next set of lights or servo 5 minutes quicker....
I think speed limit signs should be changed, sure leave red as the max speed but maybe have a green number below as to the deemed safest speed, Tiny brains and young drivers all see 110/km sign and sit on it no matter what the day/conditions are like....
Fuck the drivers in Perth it does my head in each and everytime i drive in and out!!

Had a close call just south of the Cliff Head turnoff this arvo
Heading south on the Brand around 4:15 and a 4wd towing a trailer in front of me pulls off the road and does a u-turn right in front of me. Hit the brakes hard and luckily didn't hit the other vehicle.
Don't know what the @#$& driver was thinking by pulling that move, but luckily the Mrs, our daughter and I are still here

Blindingly obvious
One of the IOD fuckwit rubber neckers had missed their turn, and were going back. Drove back from Perth this morning, took the Brand, had a perfect run. Hardly a car on the road. Shuddered to think of what the rolling traffic jam on the IOD was like with combined nice Sunday weather/end of school holidays traffic.
