Cocos Islands

Hi Guys,

Just wondering if anyone who has been to the Cocos can recommend good self contained units/houses or good value homestays ?

And also would you stay West or Home Island ?  Bearing in mind i would be chasing a surf and walking the flats.

Cheers

Matt

i use to live there when i was younger. awesome place just wish i was older to really enjoy it. from what i can remember all the accommodation is on west island. home island was where all the cocos malay live, bar a few westerners. as for places to rent out, well its been along time since i was there and back then there was the lodge and the lodge. i know though there are a lot more on offer today. hope that helps

when i went a few years back, we stayed on west island and hired a ute from the local place. we stayed at cocos beach motel rooms. pretty basic, but good nonetheless (good staff, restaraunt down the path etc.)

dont quote me on this, but i dont think you'd stay on home island if you were up for fishing. i fished nearly the entire time on west island and a little bit outside the lagoon on charters. I mostly drove around on west island finding flats to walk chucking bait and placcys to silveries, small trevs, dart (thousands of them) and of course snorkelling.
My day trip to home island involved a tour of a couple of things of cultural significance, a lot of the water around home island seemed a bit fished out by locals.

I think west island would be the way to go for you - as far as i know home island really belongs to the locals in a big way.
