Cockburn Sound Snapper Etiquette

Well i have just read the March edition of Fishing Western Australia, theres an artilce by a chap on fishing Cockburn Sound, he described how the Pro was looking at his echo sounder and indicated to his mate to drop a line in and he hooked up a snapper then other Rec boats started casting into the very same spot straight away and hooked up als

It seemed nobody minded either and was normal behaviour ?

I hope nobody casts into my spot or is the Pro fair game to the recs ? or maybe he does not mind ?

Chillaxin,,these articles can be months old before it gets into print,,the majority of the big snapper have left the Sound and you are catching the little ones from the spawning season,,,try 5 fathom bank.

Apparently if you go near the pro boat when there catchin snapper the skipper abuses the hell out of you. Heard that from a few guys who have been in the firing line! I suppose it is polite to fish away from other boats but at the end of the day no one ownes the water and you can fish where you want!

Fishing isn't a matter of life or death, it's much more serious than that!!!

I would be hurling abuse as well, plus lead sinkers Cool

Totally Agree mate

Wed, 2009-03-11 20:14

The ettiquite is quite simple, kayaks have right of way.

Seriously tho, everyone knows it gets crazy, accept it, or fish somewhere else where your stress levels will remain low. It will get crowded, that's the downside of having a well managed, awesome fishery within cooee of a capital city.

Blessed or cursed, depends on how you look at it.

kayakers thi9nk they own the water in cockburn!!!! :)

Well the ones i experienced, they would come right up within a couple of metres and drop down right next to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!, then if someone gets a fish, they surround you...

But that was just 2 experiences Ive had in the sound :)

Flag ?

Wed, 2009-03-11 20:20

Could be wrong but I thought I read somewhere that if the Pro has a flag up there is a 50m exclusion zone around him...

Have seen the fishing at it's worst during the spawning times, boats so close together that they are pushing boats off each other by hand. How some boats don't get badly damaged I don't know. But to see the boats following the Pro like a swarm of flies is pretty bad.  JMO....

Well i reckon find your own

Wed, 2009-03-11 20:51

Well i reckon find your own Snapper nobody needs to follow the Pro or anybody else,,these guys are the same type that come up and ping you.

Just yesterday i saw a picture of a South Australian pro Squid fisher and he was completly surrounded by Rec squid boats.

Any way this was all a suprise to me,,i personally like to give others a bit of space on the water and i will not be casting at the spot someone else has just pulled a Snapper from.

Wed, 2009-03-11 21:17

After 10 years plus fishing Cockburn Sound for pinks i've learnt where the fish are and how there's no comon good etiquette. Basically i used to care and do the right thing but then have the "majority" not give a shit sooooooooo if ya cant beat them then join them Wink

BTW, Big John couldnt of said it better!

remeber most pros are mad pricks and may get a bit pissy at ya,i wouldnt get to close to any boat as the skippers more than likely going to jump on your boat n go nuts.

I would not like a mad Pro

Wed, 2009-03-11 21:50

I would not like a mad Pro jumping on the kayak Surprised

I did witness one busy evening last year on the kayak with 12 boats and about 9 kayaks in a small area, perhaps that was one of the days Bodie has mentioned ?

I did see a kayak or two paddling/peddling close to boats and boats doing the same as well.

Funny in the weeks prior it would be rare to see a boat there, the reason we choose the area was we are limited in how far we can go in the Sound because of distances involved, so we stick to that one small area,,all of a sudden we started getting surrounded.

We have all ordered dive flags Cool
