Cockburn Sound Pink Snapper
Submitted by born2fish on Thu, 2011-07-28 16:22
Hey,
Me and my dad have been trying time and again to get some pinkies from the cockburn sound but with no luck. We have tried garden island, the pinnacles and the D9, Day and Night. We use 2 snelled 6/0 hooks on 60lb leader with a running ball/bean sinker. We dont know what we're doing wrong. Advice and spots would be greatly appreciated.
cheers matt

I cant help u with spots down
I cant help u with spots down that way coz i fish out of hillaries for pinkies, but the essentials of snapper in the shallows are a good steady burley trail, fishing the light change as beau mentioned and nice fresh unwaited baits, scalies herring snook whiting they all work, also the snapper like it rough so try fish with the strongest onshore breeze that u can handle and are comfortable in without putting urself in any danger, 10 to 15kt's max for me.

Sound Pinky information
G'Day Matt,
Sunrise, sunset,Anglers almanac feed times, high & low tide are better feed times but the fish need to be there.
Its important to drive around looking for larger schools of pink snapper at different locations than just structure fishing. Thats a good tip I have picked up since working with Ryan at Oceanside.

pinky
gday matt dont know about cockburn but down here in busso we anchor and berley heavy . berley consists mainly of chook pellets, mulies cubes and muncher, shell grit ,chicken bones/scraps (love a good roast) any left over bait, stale bread almost anything just dont break the trail . we try to set up at our chosen spot a couple of hours before sun down and get the trail happening and fish a small running ball sinker (about marble size)to a single chem sharp hook 5/0 -8/0 . pinkys love rough weather so as soon after a blow as possible (saftey first) also i have found around the new moon to be more productive than other phases also a high tide around dark never had much luck pre dawn good luck hope this helps.

i know who you could ask!!
there used to be a guy on this site who knew everything there is to know about snapper, especially fishing from small boats in "rough'' weather he really had everything dialled in i haven't seen him since "1992" though but some of the wise men on this site would remember him fondly, if you could get hold of this guy you would be all set. i'll try to remember his name. cheers LOL!!!!

sound snaps
i chased them for a number of years and slowly established an assortment of areas where to find them, from there work your sounder for fish. I spent ages logging weather, pressures, baits and so on but never really found a huge advantage in it. Just when id thought id cracked the code, id come home empty! Just sun up and down and definately more succesful towards the beginning of the snapper ban as schools move in. But i wouldnt encourage targeting spawning fish.

the snapper are very sparse in cockburn at this time of year
there are plenty behind tub rock and the sisters at the moment! your rigs are sweet! also try the north end of garden island! find a nice lump and burley up! all along the five fathom is also worth a shot! leave fishing inside the bay till early spring! i tend to like mullet for bait and burley!!

Are they running this early in the year around the cockburn sound or do you have to wait to September for them to start coming in in numbers?

Some of our customers have been getting amongst Pink Snapper recently in the Sound and good sizes also.
September onwards the numbers do get better but plenty around at the moment.

Yeh hey! If I had a decent size craft I'd be heading out behind the islands and anchoring and burleying up a patch of reef, shame I'm stuck with a jetski and access to a boat only half a meter longer than the ski!
