Cockburn Sound Boundary?

G'day Guys,

Does anyone know if there is a defined boundary for Cockburn sound i.e.what is the northern/western most points of Cockburn sound, is it woodman point?
When people refer to catching fish in "Cockburn sound" are they actually in Cockburn sound or are they really outside the boundary, for example if I'm fishing mewstones am I still in Cockburn sound?

Cheers

The boundsary seems to be a line from Woodman's point out to Carnac island, then down the back of Carnac and Garden Islands and roughly across to Point Peron from the southern tip of Garden Island.  You'll find pictures on this webpage of what the fisheries department class as Cockburn Sound http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/Fishing-and-Aquaculture/Recreational-Fishing/Recreational-Fishing-Rules/West-Coast-Bioregion/Pages/Seasonal-Closures.aspx

I often wonder if "the sound" gets more action than it actually does! I know for a fact some unscrupulous members of the fishing community catch a lot of snapper at "D9" lol

During the crab closure the Garden Island causway was the south west boundry according to fisheries when a called them.

If the northern boundary does

If the northern boundary does run from woodies to carnac then 90% of my "cockburn sound" snapper spots are outside of cockburn sound and nearly all my cs snapper have been caught outside cs????

I wonder how many other reported cockburn sound pinkies have in actual fact not been captured inside the defined cockburn sound boundary????

The boundaries have been in the fishing rule book for years, whats the downside? I mean, I would be looking at it from the point of view that you have some good snapper spots that you can fish even when the sound is closed for pinkies? Double bonus, in the lead up to the cockburn sound closure means you can fish away from the hordes in C.S all targetting the d9/pinnacles/gravel patches/sulphur/harding rock etc?

Fished from Woodies point drifting north and referred to it as Cockburn Sound. Technically not correct.
What is the bay actually called?

As per previous, Cockburn Sound follows the coast from Point John (just north of Point Peron), around to Woodmans Point, out to Carnac Island, then to Garden Island, following the inshore side, then from the southern most tip across to point John.

Just north of Woodmans Point is Owen Anchorage, then Success Bank with fish Rock on it, then you are into Gage Roads.

Thanks Guys,

I think that clears it up for me. As I suspected most of my Cockburn Sound captures are clode to CS but theoretically not CS.

I wonder how many other people report as having caught fish in CS but not really theorteically being caught in CS...including the fishing shows. I wonder if Ryan T can make comment.

Cockburn Sound!

Wed, 2014-05-21 13:09

(1) The Pink Snapper ban boundary is only for Fisheries to use as a boundary!

(2) Cockburn Sound extends from the South of the mouth of the Swan River at Fremantle and runs all the way down to Cape Peron near Rockingham and yes between the Islands is still Cockburn Sound!

Thanks smicko, wasn't realy asking about closure boundaries (I know where they are), as you say they're pretty obvious.

I was asking about the actual cockburn sound boundary, and from what Ryan said the actual Cockburn Sound boundary is further north than the closure boundaries, all the way north up to the freo moles.
