China-Beijing and Swan Flatty
Hi guys, going to china (Beijing specifically) in about 4 weeks for a school trip. Theres a few shopping sessions on the agenda so naturally i thought i might be able to pick up some fishing gear. We will be shopping at wangfujing street and also at the silk markets although it is more renowned for fakes. Just wondering if anyone had had any experience with these locations... and more importantly is there any fishing shops there ? I havn't been able to find out on the internet anywere. Also does anyone know any quality chinese lure making companies that will be worth looking at.
Also managed to get a few flatty in the swan yesterday, this being the biggest... much bigger to come though :P Sorry for the mobile phone photo quality :)
Cheers ! tight lines :)

I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

I have been to both places
Good fun shopping, no good fishing gear.
wang fu jing is huge, but more like expensive hay street, though the weird food stalls are a sight.
picked up a sweet as small LED Maglite for five dollars of really good quality in the markets but that is about as close to fishing gear I got.
also got excellent quality fake north face jackets with inner fleece, outer waterproof for about twenty bucks each, and same for soft shell jackets,
also two of my better buys.
they are real pushy in silk st, other markets same stuff, just less busy and less in your face.
enjoy the trip! Amazing food, people and history.
PS is that Carey baptist school trip?

hey sha
as far as that time of night - i really have no idea. I take school kids over on school trips. Also taxi drivers don't really understand English all that well and you will need to get to your place for the night.
I would just find a place to stay in an area there were pubs etc?? and walk after checking in.
If I only had a few hours in Beijing I suppose I would go to Tiannanmen square (subway stop) and if you are into sight seeing a real quick walk through Forbidden City (also known as Palace Museum) which is at Tiannanmen square (hot tips go in and out the gate you come in or you come out in no man's land and no taxis around, and the Temple of Heaven (on subway stop Tiantandonmen) which is a pretty and iconic building (or just look at it from the subway stop if you don't care too much, but across the road (there is an overpass to walk to it) is the Hongqiao Markets AKA the Pearl Markets.
This is my favourite place to shop and can get everything here with good English but less pushy than Silk St.
Finally eat. Eat lots. Eat anywhere - street food, restaurant whatever.
Food is delicious. Eat street food for breakfast. However food places not good near pearl markets (or even Tiananmen) so probably just try near where you are staying.
Airport a fair way (like an hour max) away so that sucks.
Still worth the effort.

From memory it is the Siu
From memory it is the Siu Shui Jie that's holding all the fakey? Was there myself before 2004 olympics but you would really have to bargain down their price. The rule of thumb is 50% as a minimum.
The price Ricey paid for his jumper and fleece jacket is a good guide.
I myself was hunting around for fishing gear shop but didn't have any luck. Was there for 2 days only.

yep Silk Street is Xie Shui St Markets
and really cannot go with rules like half of initial etc. They may give you a price pretty close, or one ten times the amount.
Really you have to walk away and then you start hearing real prices, or use the last price and the next shop and get their best price.
