Chasing info on Cape Leveque
Submitted by Nath86 on Tue, 2013-04-16 12:13
As the title suggests I'm chasing any info in regards to Cape Leveque. I'm heading up there this Weekend for about 5 days and will be towing my 4.5m side console with me.
I plan to do a heap of fishing and if it looks ok I'll jump in for a dive too.
Cheers Nath

I was there in early June, 2
I was there in early June, 2 years ago. Overall I was dissappointed with the place. The road which was apparently freshly graded, was shithouse with corrugations. The first 150ish km are corrugated, then you get nice bitumen for the last half of the trip.
Make sure your trailer is very sturdy, and everything in the boat secure to stop it bouncing around. I even had some of my beers explode due to the rough ride.
Next issue was constant easterly winds. It was not very attractive, as we had booked a campground on the eastern side (the only one which allowed our dog).
After the wet season, there was still huge amounts of water around on the dirt tracks and my missus decided to get us bogged
. I had to run about 5kms at sunset to find help. Got the troopie out and made it to our campground which was nice
Heaps of mozzies too
Doing daytrips /exploring was a bit of a dissappointment too. If you turn off of the main road, looking for beach access, you have to pass through Aboriginal communities and need to buy a permit. We got sick of handing over cash, so decided not to bother with some of attractions.
We developed an oil leak on the troopie (thanks to the nicely graded road) and thought we better get it checked out. We spoke to a local bloke who told us there is only one place who will deal with tourists, and his waiting times were crazy. We went to see him, and he was a top bloke and helped us out (we did not need repairs).
We decided to cut our trip short a couple days, as we were sick of being disappointed most of the time. This really was probably mainly due to the 30 knot winds which really brings you down when you wanna fish.
Good luck! Hopefully you have great weather and no vehicle problems. I will be waiting to see a report with some great photos!

Cape Leveque is a magic
Cape Leveque is a magic place.... The mackeral and tuna are quiet prolific at times just off the cape and along the reef that runs along the western beach. You will see it with the current lines when the tides are running. Further away from the reef look for the booby birds and bait schools that hold Sailfish. IMO the bottom fishing is pretty average and you will need to go further afield to get good bottom species. There are some shoals about 30 miles away west to south west maybe ? , sorry forgotten name that holds good bottom species as well as all the other suspects, mackys and tuna etc. Of course the creeks in the area hold some good jacks and if inshore bottom bashing is your thing..stick to bluebone fishing ...awesome at times on the incoming tides. Hope this helps a little.

Where will you be staying as
Where will you be staying as it depends obviously where you will launch, cape leveque side or one arm point ?
plenty of good fish to be had. Obviously only fish the bottom on the tilde change cause the movement is huge. Always maccys and tuna round to flick at and keep you entertained.
Gods country up there mate, I lived there for a stint and had some unbelievable fishing !
goodluck

G'day Nath I have been there
G'day Nath
I have been there a few times - without a boat, and have stayed in the beach shelter closest to the point for the last couple of times. Least time we were there I went for a few dives between the point and the island on the low of the spring tides (first thing in themorning). You could walk across to the island, and on the right hand side as you look out there are some great bommies, and plenty of Trout and big Bluebone to spear. I could only dive for an hour or so over slack tide, but it was well worth it. With a boat, and neap tides, I would try diving the low tide in close to the island around midday for Bluebone - just make sure your gun is up to them - I have twin 16mm rubbers which works for me...
