Submitted by rails8291 on Thu, 2012-04-12 11:42
G'day guys,
After abit of info about whiting, what would be the best rig to use to catch them from the beach, do I use bait ( what bait), bait chasers, lumo tubes( colours), size hooks, do i use a sinker, and how far out do I cast,
Cheers rails

we just use paternoster with two twisted drop loops with a star sinker on bottom small long shanked hooks with prawn...always see a few fishos whiting fishing off the boat ramp at challenge beach in the mornings ...

Pre-made Rigs are pretty cheap.
Buy one or two of them and just copy them LOL. Generally I use small bits of Ox Heart as they stay on. They will steal your bait all the time. Blood and sand worms are good also. So far as distance is concerned you will find most Whiting right on the break as they feed on material dragged off the beach by the surf and tide. Throw some burley in the surf and the fun should start.

I reckon the best bait is a fresh 'small' piece of raw red meat that is off cut from a bbq or something. It stays on really well as you will find when you try de-bait. I also just use a paternoster rig, make sure your sinker isn't too heavy so you can feel the bites. Have also caught heaps of herring on the same setup.

My prefered rig for land
My prefered rig for land based whiting is size 8 long shank, small lumo bead with a small running bean sinker.
Rails I think a 2/0 is a little to big for land based whiting

I use something similar from
I use something similar from the boat as well. #8 baitkeeper (i think), small lumo plastic squid, about a metre leader and a 1 or 2 oz tear drop swivel sinker on a running sinker clip on the main line (8kg braid - a bit over the top really). The running sinker clip means I can change to a floating berley cage real quick if i want to go for some herring.
Fish! HARD!

Yeah the lumo bead is mostly
Yeah the lumo bead is mostly just to protect the knot on the hook from wear against the sinker. With this rig I find you can feel every little bite, I must mention I am using extremly light gear 1-3kg pflueger trion, 4lb braid with 6 or 8lb leader.

As above for most
Rig: Long shank No. 8 hook, either running sinker to the bead or apternoster. But try and use red material for the luma tube effect, and a red bead. For some reason the whiting likes red. I have used red tubing and a red bead, and if no tubing wrap a thin red pipe cleaner over the shank off the hook and you gave a nice fluffy thing and then a little bait on the sharp end off the hook. Go as light as you can as mentioned above.
Method: Dont cast far and set some burley up. An oily rag floating on a rope in the break, or mashed up mulies in a hesion or onion bag treated similarly. Once they arrive its usually on, and I dont cast very far at all as mentioned above. If I dont get a bite for a couple of minutes I just jerk the rig a little, take up the slack and they usually see the moving bait. Feel the weight and strike gently, sometimes just start to wind without a strike. The strike rips the bait out off their mouths.
Bait, anything that will stay on longer is better, like mentioned above soft baits get smashed fast. Bits of squid, occy, works, meat etc.
Where! Any beach area, but adjacent to reef better, and also more likely to get bigger yellowfin whiting than the sandies there.
Hope this helps.

I like to use squid mate, i find it robust and strong and if you hook it good enough it takes them a few bites to strip the hook bare, usually long enough to hook up, as said before, paternoster, but i like a running bean sinker if its not to rough.
Long shank hook size 8 to 12 usually
