Catching squid offshore

 -Approximately what depth? 3, 5 10m?
-Does it have to be at night?
-What do i look for, just weed?
 - What size lure and colour do you use?
-Know any good spots(just point me in the right direction)

Cheers

We use to catch quite a few

We use to catch quite a few squid offshore ( 8-20m) during they day, found they always use to follow whole baits like wrasse up, but had to switch bait them when we could see them to a jig otherwise we would lose half of them. Will find them on weed, we get them on weedy reef too! Never did too well with any jigs at that depth.

This was on FFB.

Hope that helps

Been catching a few on Parmelia bank lately on orange jigs while drifting over weed in about 3-4m of water. Noticed they were taking the grunter we were throwing back while fishing for whiting.

3-4m cockburn sound

two rods each , one in each hand and when you go through a patch its so funny.

then the cast straight back to the zone and on again!!

always have a jig near the boat for the followers

Any depth , good if you can

Any depth , good if you can see the bottom though ... on broken sand / weed same as whiting ground , enough weight to keep jig down near bottom whilst drifting , try not to get weed on your jig .. change of lights good but anytime .. yellow and white jigs have been the winners lately  .. but it's been hard work of late , winter months are usually more productive .. and they seem to school so if you get some , have another drift over the same track ...

I just drift over the

I just drift over the sand/weed patches in cockburn sound. I normally go morning to midday. Cast the jig out then just drift along and use a lift-lift-pause action with the rod.  I use 2.5 size jig and have had caught squid on a range of colours. Use a quality light (like 4lb) flourocarbon leader. Thats what works for me! Good fun, and good eating!!
