Hi lads,
Does anyone have experience catching sea urchins? if so are they plentiful? I’ve never really looked for them snorkeling before. has anyone got any info?
Cheers.

Bag limit of 20 so can't be
Bag limit of 20 so can't be endangered, Dec-Feb season. I've seen them on inshore reefs up Leeman way and my mate got a spike from one in his toe once that blew up like a football. I'd love to try it one time.

The roe in them is really nice, very unique flavour, but you’ll be looking for your next one one after eating your first.

As far as I am aware you can
As far as I am aware you can only catch them in the west coast zone on the abalone open days. If you download the abalone fishing guide it is stated in there. Anywhere north of moore river you cant take them at all it is closed till further notice. It makes no sense. I want to take them in exmouth where there are millions. Very confusing if you look on the fisheries website as it makes no mention of that and gives open seasons for all zones.

Worst thing I've ever tasted
Worst thing I've ever tasted literally. To some they're a delicacy so you just gotta try them!

Different types taste
Different types taste different. They are only good at certain times of year. They can taste foul sometimes. Once you get to know what time of year and which ones to look out for then your in for a treat. If you like raw seafood then you should love urchin. My favourite is collector urchins but only the biggest ones and only around feb-march.If it isnt bright orange inside then dont eat it. Exmouth has millions of them and they are easy to get.

I love them, like a sweet
I love them, like a sweet egg yolk with a mild sea saltiness. May only be taken in Abalone season now :(

Its probably hypocritical of
Its probably hypocritical of me as I would like to try it but can't get past the fact that we are only eating the smallest bit of the animal and wasting the rest. I'm sure I'd get over it if I liked it tho.
