Catching Mullet
Submitted by John the Pom on Sun, 2010-04-18 21:43
Went up to Quinn's Rocks on Saturday for a couple of hours with the young'un for the second time.
The first time we went we managed the usual herring and skippy, but on Saturday we landed a couple of decent tarwhine, some nice fat gardies and a couple of herring then it went dead.
The young'un breaks out the berley blob and proceeds to catch a couple of monster mullet that came off at his feet.
We ended up with two, one quite a decent size as well all caught on prawn.
Anyone else caught one on prawn, I didn't think they took prawns?
A good day overall with tarwhine and mullet being new species to tick off, sorry no photos as we forgot the camera.

well done. with the mullet
well done. with the mullet they can be fussy at times but when they are hungry they will take a range of baits but you need small hooks as their mouths are only small.

I actually think they are quite a nice eating fish
Iv'e caught more of them on prawn than I care to remember, although it was quit a few years ago. There was this spot I found at the Ocean Reef that always seemed to produce big numbers of them all the time and they were always a very good size.

Better
They go well as crab bait.No where near as good as its cousin the mullet.IMO one would have to be hard up for a feed of fish to eat pilch.
A perfect spot for pilch/yellow eyed mullet would be planted under a passionfruit vine.

I was thinking that, but
I was thinking that, but wanted to make sure.
So the consensus would be that I can use them for crab bait on Friday then?
It's the sea mullet that taste ok in the smoker, I've eaten them before and they were average and very oily, I've got a smoker so might give one a whirl the next time I see them.
