Trick photography

They were even in to trick photography then!! Note how far back the blokes are standing from the cod giving the impression that it is bigger than it really is.

Still a bloody big fish.

There was a queensland groper at the end of the jetty years ago for a while. I`d say one of them. Big bugger though

Background on Bob Whiteland & a little jetty history

Sun, 2010-10-31 23:50

Bob Whiteland ran Whitelands Marine for many years in Adelaide Street Busso opposite the rear of the Esplanade Hotel.  There is every likelihood that this fish was caught offshore in the bay from a boat. Before the jetty was taken out by Cyclone Alby in 1978 there was a lower platform some 200 metres from the shoreline on the west side of the promenade section of the jetty (past the swimming area & dive board / tower) a large crane attached to the jetty structure would lift the catches up to the higher portion of the jetty where they could be moved by cart - hence the rope through the fishes jaw & the base of the block & tackle style hook.  If you look carefully where the lad is standing you can see the base of the pylons of the railway jetty (or skeleton jetty - current jetty being replaced) just underneath the handrail the boy is leaning on. The photo is taken facing the east on the promenade near what was called the rotunda - a shaded area where the town band often played!

As long as 10 years, maybe longer a BIG Queensland groper haunted the end of the jetty and was seen on occasion - never hooked to my knowledge. It was close to 8 feet in length and well over 100 kg - I remember a photo being shown in the local paper where the fish dwarfed a 6 ft scuba diver - serious beast in anyone's language. Hope this has been useful info on the background of the fish. Cheers Pez
