Bream help!

I'm yet to crack a 30cm bream, my best fish is 26cm from the Swan.

Can someone help me on cracking my first 30cm bream. what is the best bait?

Hi SamC, The most important

Sun, 2011-09-04 16:00

Hi SamC,

The most important thing about bream fishing is getting some good quality gear. It will make the world of difference. Basically you want some gear that's not only lightweight, but very strong and with a good drag to stop them from taking you around pylons and spooling you on the flats.

The combo you go for really depends on your budget, but I have found that a more expensive one generally catches more bream. What I'm currently using is a 10' Jarvis Walker Auora spin rod. It's rated 4-8kg so it's got plenty of stopping power and its great for casting SPs (Soft Plastic Lures) on the flats. I've got a couple of different bream reels at the moment which I alternate between depending on the situation. Probably my favourite at the moment is my Penn 330GTI. This reel is nicley spooled up with 100m of Jarvis Walker 37lb monofilament line and is a pleasure to use.

I mainly fish from the shore, hence the gear that I use, but if you are boat fishing i'd recomend getting an Alvey reel. They are extremley lightweight and tough reels with hardly anything that can go wrong with them, so they are great to use in the boat. I normally run straight wire (100lb multistrand is best) when i'm boat fishing.

As for lures, well that's all personal choice. Differnt people prefer different lures, but I personally reckon you can't go past the old 6 hook Sabiki rigs. Sure Catch make some really good quality ones and you can pick them up at your local BCF or Annaconda store. I usually use these under a float, but they are so versatile, you can rig them on a sinker or even a berley cage!

Anyway, best of luck!

Lol wtf 37lb line on a 10ft

Sun, 2011-09-04 16:25

Lol wtf 37lb line on a 10ft rod for bream? 4-8kg is almost too much- bream dont really grow to 8kg...But good advice and a longer rod means you can cast further- better from the shore.

Cheers Ben

Sun, 2011-09-04 16:37

I use 80 pound flurocarbon straight thru for the 30 cm breams match with a Nitro Viper Rod and Saltiga 8000 reel,,try this Sam and see how you go around Lake Monger and Lake Joondalup thats where the bigguns reside low tide,,bright sunny days and clear water so the brims can see your Halco hummer lures are the go

My credentials speak for themselves  check out page 58 of the Sept/oct WAFM mag i am on the right, river to sea vibes in 35 mm get the odd fish as well,,good luck and let us know how you go

You sure did troll up some good nibbles, and If it wasnt for me looking twice at your name I would have given you some tips. Now you can bugger off and dont ask for any more from me because Ill not give any advise on anything to you.

And dont pick on Jarvis Walker, my nice  Diawa Flame's tip just suffered failure (twice actually 1st dont offer quality to mates catching squid - how can you high stick and break the tip on squid has me beat, but I was looking the other way when I heard the crack, 2nd not packing it away as normal ready to go to the repair shop, leaving it out, dogs knocked it over and the mover of the lawn ran over the tip and removed another cm or 2 - daft prick "cough cough" didnt see it because thats not where they normally go) and being partnered with a Stradic 4000CI4 I had to dig in the shed, and the only rod in there that would semi do the job until I either fix the flame or get a new rod for the CI4 was this old JW. Now due to a bloody sore back couldnt get out this weekend (first time in about 6 months apart from holidays) to test this.

I was looking forward to it in an odd way, now I am sure I will match the reel before next weekend. Might post the question about fixing or new rod and see. The loss of finesse doesnt phase me. Now if you answer I will promptly ignore your wrong answer.
