Bream braid to fluoro

Hi everyone. I know this topic has been discussed before but I can't seem to find any that work. I am currently using 4lb fins braid and 8lb yamashita fluoro leader. I use the double uni not and a couple other ones but whenever I try to cast small 4g lures as hard as I can the not seems to break really easily. I think that the lines may be cutting each other? Anyway any help would be appreciated.

How old is the Finns?

I personally like it but as it ages, especially light, it has broken in my experience.

where does it break?

If it is at the knot there is an obvious tying issue. I would be surprised with the lure weight if it is the fluoro leader that parts. As mentioned below firing out a lure with 4lb might stress the braid.

 It's breaking at the knot.

It's breaking at the knot. My knots never break for beach fishing which is weird but it's the braid that slips usually. I have even been sound 7 twists for the uni knot, not 5.

With a braid uniknot at the very least double the turns. If I am going to use a Uni in braid I often triple or even quad the turns to about 10-15.

Only use this if I am lazy, or night time as I can tie a Uni totally blind. So if it is slipping at the knot it is not your technique thats at fault, its the braid slipping. If you can also tie a Bimini so you have a double to tie the Uni, and that makes it stronger. I dont like just doubling the braid as the tag end drives me nut in the tieing process. Start with a neat Bimini, but it does take practice to perfect. But well worth learning this "fun" knot.

 Good advice with the bimini.

I use a bimini for my albright knots but now that you've mentioned it it would be great for double uni alslo.

Albright knot

Fri, 2014-09-05 13:47

Albright knot every time for me, but it takes practice to tie a nice neat strong knot..... there is a big difference between the breaking strain of a well or poorly tied Albright.

A lot of it comes down to the braid and leader material too, as some tie better than others. I have found that the combo of YGK modragon braid and nitlon fluorocarbon ties exceptionally well.

for light tackle I use an albright. With the braid being so thin try doubling it over and using that. An albright works much better for different diameter lines (i.e. braid to mono) and is easy to tie

Try this method for the FG

Try this method for the FG knot.  Slim, strong and easy to tie, though more involved than the double uni knot.

Thanks bushbeaver! I tried it and it is really good. I pulled it so hard that it gave my finger a big paper cut and the line didn't even look close to breaking.

Lure weight

Fri, 2014-09-05 13:48

I would also say that casting a 20g lure with four pound may also be pushing the friendship. For a lure of that weight I would be using 8lb +

Oops srry mate I was thinking of huge ecogear sx-40 and put down the Halco twisty 20g weight lol. Actually the sx-40 only weighs 4g at the most so that shouldn't overload the line too much.

 I've found the albright knot

Tue, 2014-09-09 22:20

I've found the albright knot to be incredibly strong and incredibly simple (especially in windy conditions) with my 4lb fins and 6lb vanish leader. I actually pulled me and my dinghy 20m toward a snag on the weekend without it breaking. I use both that and the double uni knot for my squid/tailor rig but with the double uni knot I do 5 twists for the mono and 8 twists for the braid.

If you use a long leader it

Thu, 2014-09-11 15:29

If you use a long leader it is probably wrapping around a guide on the way out which is causing a break off. Try having the leader nearly out the last couple of guides before casting and see what happens then.

Albright is easy to tie but

Thu, 2014-09-11 22:35

Albright is easy to tie but seems to cut itself after a while. I use a FG knot, but if tieing when I'm out I use a double uni. 4 turns on the mono, 10 turns on the braid. Running 6lb braid, 6lb fluro casting off two drunken monkeys rod. Haven't had any wind knots or breaks.
