Boat Fishing: Adelaide to Perth migration

Hi All,

This is my first post on your excellent forums, as my wife and I are moving over to Perth from Adelaide in a few months.  Naturally I'm using the spare time I have to prepare for the move by researching the most important thing - Fishing.  We are towing the boat over with us so will need to find out as much as possible about my favourite past time in this strange new land! :)

I have heard good things about boat fishing in Perth, and I am hoping to have those rumours confirmed!  My wife and I are moving to Quinn's Rocks, which I understand is quite a ways north of most of the metro fishing.

I dont really know where to begin with my journey to finding excellent fishing spots, so I thought I'd query the experts here!  Things I would love to hear about are:

- Fishing expecations from mindarie boat ramp, what species are about and what kind of areas are best to look out for and when.  All my fishing knowledge is SA based, which I'm sure will need to be tweaked!  My boat has about 60km round trip range.

- Fishing regulations, I have spent some time on fish.wa.gov.au reading the official brochures on bag limits, marine parks, the RFBL, etc. but is there anything else I should know that differs between SA and WA?

- Trailer/Boat registration and Operator licensing requirements.  What do I need to do to convert everything over to WA registration?

- Anything else I should know!

Thanks in advance for all your input even if it is just pointing me into the right directions, I can't wait to get over there and start fishing!

Matt

PS> Attached is a picture of me with a double header of KG Whiting off the coast of Port Hughes on the Yorkes Peninsula. I'm hoping to start an even better WA photo album soon!

Mate

Welcome to the forum, you will no doubt recieve loads of good advice.

You will be passing many a good water before you hit Perth so take yur time and fish your way accross the "Bight"

Plenty of options around Perth and both North and South.

If anything get thinking 'jigging'; once you start you wont do much else :)

Plenty of time to search the forums and see what WA has to offer.

Rego's will just be a straight swap and you should be reimbursed for your SA ones once transferred. Just purchased a new boat/trailer in QLD and then transferred Rego here in WA and only issue was paperwork RE HIN which took 5m ~ $80. All else good and reimbursed from QLD also.

You need a Recreational Skippers Ticket here and considering you have one from SA they should just issue you one on the spot (dont quote me though).

Rules and Regs as you have viewed but be aware of the Ban in southern waters over summer. You will read all about it.

Dont forget to change your EPIRB details once you get here.

Thanks heaps for the warm welcome and replies so far!  Some great links to follow up there on registration & licensing, I'll be sorting out that stuff as soon as I have a locked down address.

Does anyone have any input on fishing from mindarie harbour? Do I need to head out far and are there any good species inhabiting the area?

Pete, you mentioned the water not getting that flat out there, is this mostly due to swell or wind? True, we get a few lucky days in SA thanks to the properties of being gulf, but we also get dodge tides too.

Thanks again for the replies, I look forward to learning more.

Hi Matt

Heres my experience on fishing out of mindarie..... not far offshore is the 3 mile reef system which runs up a fair bit of out metro coastline and generally breaks in small to moderate swell.  Around that reef although it has been heavily fished you can  pick up some west australian dhufish, pink snapper and lots of smaller tasties like KG whiting, Breaksea cod, fox fish.  This reef system is abundant with skipjack trevally, wrasse and lots of other smaller species. from Jan to May we have a few spanish macks come in close for a bit of a treat

Guys with the bigger boats and those chasing bigger fish generally head out to the 30m-50m mark which starts about 10 nautical miles out or there abouts.  I have a 4.75 quintrex and get out about 20 nautical miles on very good days but we tend to get a strong SW wind for alot of the year more so in the afternoon, we also get particularly in summer strong easterlies that can make it pretty unpleasnat also.  In general Perth is windy so you need to pick your days and times.  Out wide in the depths I mentioned most people are targetting WA Dhufish, Baldchin groper, pink snapper, KG whiting(big ones) along with heaps of other species.  and we have alot of arm stretching samson fish around

Keep your eyes peeled on this website and you should get the picture pretty quickly

Excellent tips there, is the three mile reef further out past the quinn's rocks formation?  Those rocks seem like decent fishing area so does burns rocks, but i'm reading that it is mainly diving at the latter?

It will take me some time to be able to translate the local fishing reports since I don't know the local names for fishing spots/wrecks/reefs.  Any tips to get me started on the most commonly used names and where I can find them would be great!

How big is your boat Matt?

Do a search on fishing 3 mile.  There is tons of info on ways to fish it and do well.

Anchoring and burleying up will work for sure.

Caught allsorts off it , including sambo's, shark  and YTK as well as all that Rig suggested.

If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

My boat is a 5.35m stejcraft, with a 115hp Johnson crossflow V4 on the back.  The deeper hull means it does alright in rough conditions, though it's not my preference!

Sounds like the 3 mile system is the best place for me to start.  Do you get any squid in those waters?

I'm curious about the required equipment regulations in WA waters, is it similar to SA?

The link will help in regards to WA regs.

Not sure about the squid up that way, But think you could find some over weed banks.

Tend to do all my squiding around Garden Island north end, and between Penguin Island and Long Point and have been bagging out with most around the 0.8kg to 1.4kg mark, east side of Carnac Island does well too.

Cockburn's not that far a drive for a days fishing!
