We will be having a crack. At least there is no stringing up of hundreds of sambos this year which has been a bloody discgrace, so the MAAC guys have leaned something, but the cardigan brigade at the MAAC reallly need to get up with the times. How about brag Matt’s and photos for biggest sambo then release, and why no tuna category. And how about ice baths for the fish so they can be eaten later, rather than in hessian bags in the sun
Totally agree, IMO the Pirtek fishing challenge is a perfect example of how easy it is to run a catch and release comp and they do it nationally. The days of catching large numbers of fish in order win a prize should be long gone.
I remember when we had the F/W comp at Exmouth, it was all brag mat photos submitted for each category.
Worked a treat when everyone followed the rules, but that was a very social event run by very social folks (Adam).
Things are different when there is prestige on the line. LOL

I've sent emails to them several times over the years and not even had replies.
nothing to add here zoom, maybe you would like to explain them comments, have you had a bad expierience with maac or are you just jealous of the lucky people that are members and get to enjoy all the benefits of the club?
No, I'm an ORSSC member. ORSSC welcomes kids at the club and has even upgraded the playground, which for my 3 and 5 year olds is great as I get to go down and have a beer with mates while they play within sight.
I stopped entering when a few years ago a member(mate) told me that he & a few guys went out a few days earlier and dropped rather large burley bombs in certain areas to attract fish for the comp day. Didn't work as that year it was cancelled due to bad weather, but makes ya think what else is going on to ensure "club" wins. I think one year they put off naming prizes for species until weigh in time, a bit odd I thought. Anyway, good luck to all those who enter and be safe, hope the weather is kind on the day.
Anybody entering the comp could have done or be doing it, don't have a problem with that. That's using a bit of initiative and thinking outside the box.
It's a very archaic thing to hold what amounts to a kill and show contest these days with so many groups out to shame the sport of fishing.
Time to change to what is now acceptable to the general public and what is not, was it nice to go and see some great fish that had been caught at the weigh-in yes it was.
However we must all be aware of the what Mr and Mrs public are prepared to see and piles of sambos at a rubbish dump is something they are not happy with.
What ever happened to that Australian value that was enshrined in our character that it was "a fair go for all" to contestants in whatever competitions. I guess it went the same way as those who sold their values and moral compass for their own egos and the hollow prestige of winning, no matter what it takes.
Everyone wants to hold their competitions and tournaments in the same two months of the year when we have good weather and the best pelagic fishing. Happens every year. In the 6-8 week period between mid-Feb and early April you have:
PGFC Marlin Cup
FSC Blue Marlin Classic
MAAC Bluewater Classic
GDOFC Abrolhos Tournament
EGFC AIBT
EGFC Gamex
PGFC WA Open (Jurien Bay)
Calamari Classic
and probably others that I've missed.
It gets worse because clubs also want to pick the dates that coincide with the best moon phases.
What's the go with the Hillarys and OR ramps tomorrow based on previous Bluewater Classics? Is it worth heading up to Mindarie/Two Rocks for those not participating in the classic with the extra boats using the two ramps for the comp?
Cheers mate. We're planning on hitting the ramp at 6:30 so should be ok plus the comp guys will be in the water a lot quicker than the general weekend warrior crowd

Is there still talk of them having a private ramp when the marina is developed similar to the CPBA Mulie?

Yes, as far as I know. I think ORSSC will be pushing for a Hillarys YC type arrangement which includes storage and pens as well.

From a simple comment about weather it generates into a pile of crap not worth reading.
Thankfully the weather looks better, and I'm going to do what I do most weekends...go fishing!!
At the end of it, if I have a nice fish I'll weigh it in at the MAAC. I won't have any morale dilemmas at all.
I'm a 30 year member of ORSSC, but I like MAAC and call many of their members friends.
They clearly run a competition the public wants, otherwise there wouldn't be 800 people entering each year.
And, they have changed....Samsonfish are out. Pretty much everything on the list are desirable fish for someone's palate.

I reckon...
Both Ocean Reef and Hillarys will be congested. Start time is 6am, so from say 5am to 6:30am would be a good time to avoid those ramps
