So how exactly was he planning to get you on this one? Can he "fake" pay you on paypal? or.... obviously a scam but I'm, not totally seeing the scam in it?

They pay you, then paypal

They pay you, then paypal confiscates the money. I had it happen once and had to take paypal and ebay to the office of fair trading.

SAME!!!

Here is a couple i have delt with.....

Hi,

I am selling this beautiful, well maintained 2002 Bayliner 2150 Classic Heritage Ed Capri Bowrider and the trailer because my brigade will deploy for 14 months to Afghanistan. Excellent wakeboard boat as well as skiing and harbour boat. Boat and trailer fully serviced ready to use. No need to spend a thing. In excellent pre-loved condition, well looked after and always been garaged. Always been cleaned after use. Regrettable sale. I'm under enormous time pressure cause I need to sell it fast, before 20th of May that being the reason for selling it so low. I do have the title, clear. Here you can see pictures: http://s1136.photobucket.com/albums/n491/2002Bayliner2150ClassicHeritage/?start=all

It is still available for sale if interested, price as stated in the ad $6500. The boat is located in Katherine, NT and in case it gets sold I will take care of shipping.

The transaction will be managed by Google Checkout for our own protection as they act as a neutral third part. Google Checkout policy is safe & advantageous for both of us: will keep the money until you inspect/test the boat and in the mean time, offers me the guarantee that you have the amount needed to buy it and you will pay it once you received and accepted it.

If you wish to purchase it, please visit & register at www.googlecheckout.com and then provide me the registered email address and your full name.

Let me know if you are interested, email back.
Sincerely,
Sgt.Christopher Hutson

And Next reply

Hi,

One of a kind 5L V8 260HP Alpha Mercruiser engine with separate cooling system for salt water. Pro series wakeboard tower with custom canopy, timber deck, Clarion stereo system, full boat covers and brand new prop still in box. Custom American trailer with dual axle, Alloy rims, 4 drum brakes. Has only been used on the water for approx 150 hours. Seats 9 with life jackets included.
As I've previously told you, I'm currently involved in a military program, temporarily based in Katherine, NT, as I'll be changing it for Afghanistan very soon. Due to military security reasons I'm restricted from leaving the unit's facility under any purpose and have strictly limited phone access.
The shipping won't be a problem; military has a considerable discount, so I can handle it by myself, with no charges whatsoever on your account. The boat will be sent along with all its documents including title, bill of sale and everything else you'll need.
Because it's such a large transaction, I'd suggest using an authorized third party, Google Checkout for instance. I've done some research and that's the safest way to do it. That's why, I've taken the liberty to prearrange things with them, using their escrow Google Checkout. I thought you might want to see it there, so I've asked them to allow viewers to inspect the boat; but their reply was: "We are not a showroom!" No worries cause I'll grant you a 5 days inspection period (to test it) from the moment you receive it, before Google Checkout escrow releases your money to me. The boat is located in their warehouse in Katherine, NT(ready for delivery).

If you wish to purchase it, please visit & register at www.googlecheckout.com and provide me the registered email address and your full name, or just send me your FULL NAME and I will register you at Google Checkout as buyer for my boat and then they will contact you with all details needed for complete the deal.

After the transaction is processed they will send you the invoice explaining the exact procedure...it's quite simple.
Thank you,
Sgt.Christopher Hutson

They request info, such as

Thu, 2011-06-30 19:21

They request info, such as Paypal email (which is not so much an issue as that is pretty secure), but also pick up address, contact number etc etc, then at a later date the road they will try to use it, asking you to confirm is your details are correct which will make you second guess if the later notification of a prize etc is real or not - how can it not be, they have all your details .......  get the picture?

Bloody scammers!

Thu, 2011-06-30 19:31

The other way they get you, is by asking you to pay the freight, and they'll add it onto the bill!

A lady at work got done this way.

1. They say they buy the product, and submit a credit card number that you can use. The c/c is a fresh stolen one, so nothing untoward shows up when checked.

2. Payment is processed with no probs at the time. (But then usually revoked and reversed a week to a month down the track by the bank when the owner of the card says it is a fraudulent transaction!)

3. Buyer then asks for you to add the freight costs to the invoice, and pay for this up front, usually via moneyorder.

4. They'll then find some sort of delay in proceedings, be-it customs, paperwork, legal, etc etc and try and get more money from you.  Again via immediate and untracable moneyorders etc

They never have any intention of getting the original product they purchase! It is simply the "leg-opener" to get what they can from you.

Nowadays, its not just 'buyer beware'......... its also 'seller beware'!

I think some scammers

Fri, 2011-07-01 00:17

can set up fake e-bay fronts, and try and direct you to there paypal link which sends you off somewhere they can manage it. I chap at work was buying something that was really good quality but really cheap, too cheap too good to be true. On a closer inpection their ltem even went off to some fake ebay front page, after contacting ebay to investigate, they came back with a response of it not being their website and paypal services....
