Billfish Bonanza 2016
Submitted by mullinz on Tue, 2016-11-15 16:16
Had the pleasure of fishing Billfish Bonanza with the Innkeeper crew. Quiet fishing with very few fish caught over the 3 days. We took out the win though with 3 blacks on 15kg.
Brendan's a new charter operator in Exmouth and certainly knows his stuff! Not to mention his 44' O'brien is an absolute weapon!! Not many boats I know of that are capable of backing up on fish at 12 knots! Can't recommend him enough if you're looking for a charter

Good work. Was certainly hard going out there. We didn't fish the comp but were out both days chasing blues. Only saw one that buzzed in and straight out without feeding.
I do the mad rush back to work and then the crew goes 3 from 3 on blues today. Typical.

great boat, one of the best
great boat, one of the best looking Aus convertibles made, surprised they are not more popular as they are the same price (actually a bit cheaper) than similar size Riviera's - and there is plenty of those around

The boat is capable of backing up on a fish at 17knots?? is that a typo or are you talking 17knot winds?

Either a typo or his GPS needs recalibration.

I don't know about the Obrien
I don't know about the Obrien - but you can get some speed up in reverse if you have the right shape hull - helps lift the back too if you have your trim tabs in the max bow up position

Video
I reckon those guys in the video would be pushing 12 knots max, not to mention they had people all lined up on the front to counter balance it and a high speed water transfer pump pulling water out of the boat.
I also think at 12 knots reverse your trim tab position would be negligible as they would be long gone from the boat.
Happy to be proven wrong but backing on a fish at 17 knots just sounds incredulous. I would do a charter just to see that!!

yes it was staged and no idea
yes it was staged and no idea how fast they are going - was just interesting to see how the boat was planning
you would be surprised what trim tabs can do under power in reverse! I have not seen many boats lift the arse right out but when backing up into a choppy sea it can make the difference between copping a few large slabs of water into the cockpit or not

The g & s were renowned for going pretty quick in reverse. Assegai as well I believe. Impressive to see what a decent skipper can make a game boat do.
