i dont follow the almanac, its a load of bull! depends what your fishing for though, i dont care about moon phases all that much ,cept for ulloway (and it dosnt phase me all that much)

 The almanac follows a pattern if you look at it.  3 black days straight after the new moon and 2 black days around the full moon. 1 a day before and 1 a day after.

I prefer to fish the lead up to a new moon, but after keeping a record for a while there doesn't seem to be any pattern to it. I have had some of my better days when the almanac suggests it's no good. Go figure!! 

Would also depend on what species you are targeting too.

Cheers Steve, we are planning a trip to The Islands off Carnarvon in early June, and old mate swears by the almanac.

I have dowloaded a moon calander and it shows a New Moon on 1/06/2011 and Full Moon on the 15th.

It's 5 days on the water so weather will play a huge part. I'm with you that you Can catch on poor days. I find the feeding times usefull though.

Definatly New moon being the best and often the lead up & after the Full also good.

As for the Alamanac, Ryan swears by the anglers almanac, mainly for mulloways and snappers but also demersals ie working out how long to hang out at a spot/area for.

Yeah Honsu i thought New Moon as well, will be slaying Pinkies up there for sure.

Last Wednesday we fished about 20 miles out from The Cut and the sounder was showing fish at lots of places, however, the fish weren't really interested. I don't know whether mid to late morning is a good time or not, but we've caught fish at these times on previous trips, so I don't know 

If morning and evening are good times for land based fishing, does it hold true for bottom bouncing too??

 The best time to fish is when the weather lets you.

Don't know about the moons but I am a big believer of tide changes.

Specially in the bay for pinkies. I tide change on dawn or dusk is perfect.

Don't think that the middle of the day is the best time for dhuies, never seem to get too many at that time.

ive never kept records of captures and moon phases, but one thing i do know is you get more fish on a slow drift.

I noticed at the Abrolhos while being a deckie on a charter boat that the fish would shut down at 10.30 AM and would be back on the feed at 1.30 PM almost always. Moon phases made no difference

 best time to fish is anytime. weather you catch anything or not is a diff story but who realy cares as long as your out there enjoying something you love doing

Ha Ha Fathom for years I've been trying to find someone else who thinks the same, for as long as I can remember I've never caught good sized fish at lunch time or even any but early morning or arvo no worries. I to also have given up on the almanac, it became to inconsistent ....

If possible I prefer fishing on a rising tide but try to steer clear of the spring tides on the full or new moons becuase up here where one likes to fish it affects how fast you drift or when anchored how far out the back of the boat your rig will be.

With regard to the Anglers almanac and bite times, I've never found a fish that could read for it to know when it was supposed to bite!

 lol personally when the weather permits micky is my fav, but otherwise deffinately early to late  morning, is my choice as always , speaking of which mate..

there is a bunch of scientists working on a wind almanac overseas......... they will have best results after eating chilly and beans. :)

Thats my only 3 rules. And up here being able to launch the boat and come back when you want to, so watch the tides for that.

fish like other creatures have to eat to survive, and as far as I am aware dont have breakfast, lunch and dinner. Their feeding is governed by when there is food around, and perhaps a rising tide pushes more bait fish over reefs etc.

I watched the "tame" Spangos at Coral Bay for a few minutes at Xmas time. They always appeared to be cruising looking for food. As soon as you offered something they would immediately change and come in to eat.

I tried this with a couple off Mulies that I broke in 2, and chose a time away from the "normal" spango feeding time up there. If they were that programmed why would they be cruising around looking for food away from that feeding time. By the way they have some huge ability to open their mouth and easily would inhale big baits.

Wasnt to sure whether it was legal or not to feed the Spangos but I saw no signs and there wasnt a hook embedded in the mulies anyway. I was trying to learn something that interested me and that was when do fish feed. By the way it was low tide about 10am.

I think that if you offered something nice to a fish it is not going to ignore it. It IMO just mean that the fish we target arent there at certain times, and what we see on the sounders might be fish, just not the right ones.

I have been down fishing down singleton on many occasion doing all nighters when the almanac has said it was the best time for fishing and all there was were blowies around. But when it said it was a fair night I caught a shark and a nice mulloway so I dont really follow the almanac to religously

I spent a few years following the almanac and also using it as a diary. Fished 2-4 times a week mostly targetting Mulloway. To be honest it did work a little as a guide but the diary side of things with times fished and fish caught lined up with moon phases and tides proved to be the key.

Took a while to put it all together but when it does you will be amazed.

I think the answer is to use it as a guide only, otherwise when the winds are fair but the bible says poor day, you might not go out.

always get out if weather and other factors allow

One thing we always say is the Anglers Almanac isnt going to help if the fish arent there. Its a "guide" on when the fish can bite and yes you need them to be there.....ps yes tides/moons also important. MO - Ryan on the up & coming snapper shows talks about the effectiveness of the Anglers Almanac & Tide Guide Books
