Best sources of weather information
Submitted by davewillo on Mon, 2024-12-16 17:30
The post below regarding swell prompted me to ask where people think the best sources of accurate wind and wave data can be found. I have had really accurate stuff from Willy Weather but also have seen it say the wind at Hillarys boiat harbour is 4 knots when it is very clearly a lot more than that! Most of us probably compare a number of sources so I'm interested in hearing.
Cheers

i usually use a combo of seabreeze, willyweather and also have stsarted using windy.
i find seabreeze quite often seems to underestimate things lol. so far have been pretty impressed with windy, and tend to go with windy and willyweather the most
this dilemna is kinda what prompted my question about tuesday to begin with as looking at seabreeze doesnt look too bad, yet looking at bom, looks horrendous. i typically err on the side of caution and if one or more are showing unfavourable cnditons i play it safe and either stay close or dont go.

We use "Windy" and look at all forecast models on there. You can look at all the forecast models and make judgement from there. ECMWF is said to be the most accurate and is the standard model Windy uses. BOM and Willy use Access which you can see for your area you plan to fish.
it also has wave information (seas and swell) plus all the other stuff like rain etc.
been pretty accurate in the past and looking at all models gives you some sort of confidence in predicted wind patterns.

forecast
The most accurate is Predict wind a British global forecast system. I fished commercially for 43 years and got sick of local forcasts and thier inaccuracies, they have a free versionwhich is far more reliable. Give ita try.

Model
HI Which model do you find the best. Yesterday in bunbury we had a howling easterly and the PWG and UKMO were the two that were reasonably close.

Fishranger for me he uses
Fishranger for me he uses BOM and GFS for the comparison. Excellent graphs for seas, swell and combined. Also tides, wave period and lunar. Less than $50 a year for subs.

i also jump onto BoM's meteye to get an idea if there are subtle changes to the wind if I head north or South from my departure point

Buoyweather
Pick the spot off shore where you are fishing and get the forecast for there.
Does cost for premium.
Windy works well too.

Windy
I mainly use Windy due to ability to look at multiple models.... When they all align, it gives me some confidence!

I use BOM for their warnings, Windy for Forecasts and Seabreeze to give an idea.

Some interesting responses
Thanks everyone. Some interesting responses there. I have tried Windy but didn't get what I was looking for. Turns out I was looking wrong all along! I tend to look at WillyWeather and BOM if the forecast is good but look everywhere if it looks marginal. One really bad trip home from Rotto has made me very cautious.

Windy has a huge amount of information and it can be confusing until you figure out how to drive it.

Yeah I agree Paul. Because
Yeah I agree Paul. Because most of my boating is primarily heading to and from Rotto I am mostly interested in a good window to either head over or head back. If I can't head over because of wind it doesn't matter about coming back! I also want to try to avoid any times where we are at Rotto and it's blowing its guts out as there's not a lot of fun in that either.
Right now I'm looking to head over on Sunday morning, which looks good, and head back early Tuesday morning, which looks okay but not great. We weigh probably 4.5+ tonnes so some chop isn't too much of an issue, unless it combines with big swell, which is where it got sketchy on me a couple of years ago. My boat isn't designed to travel with a large following sea. That was our fault as we stayed way later than we would normally do and the wind really picked up and had time to create some serious waves. In the event I get caught again I'll head straight for Cottesloe and improve teh angle, then turn north when I get closer in. Live and learn!
