Best setup for chasing reds + bottom bashing

Hi,

I am looking for a bottom bouncing setup that is strong enough and holds enough line for chasing reds and bottom dwelling species but light enough to give me a good challenge. I am trying to lighten a lot of my gear for a bit more sport. Been using a Calcutta 400TE on a Shimano 5-8kg Ian Miller Raider lately but might need to go a bit heavier when I go out deeper for chasing reds. Any ideas? Thanks.

Go the broomstick dude, with at least 24kg line. Unless you live in a mythical place where reds and Noah's coexist in harmony

tyrnos 30 combo

Wed, 2012-06-13 16:30

with the tyrnos rod! great for pulling those big cod out of the holes that usually get your bait before the reds get there! and also gives you plenty of power for when the noahs turn up! i also have a saltist 30 and saltiga jig rod for when in shallow water upto 40 metres

Do you think that it would suit? I have it loaded with 80lb jigging braid on a 15-24kg rod. Feels a bit too solid but saying that I havent hooked a big red yet. It handled a medium size red no worries. Yeah, plenty of noahs around here. Doesnt matter what depth we fish in. Thanks for the advice.  It seems most use an overhead setup. Is that personal preferance, line holding capabilities or better suited? Cheers.

either tyrnos 12 as it has the same drag as the bigger models but is way lighter on say a live fibre 10 -15 stroker (budget combo)

or talica 12 on a jigging master ocean god! (medium price combo)

Saying this as i have both and both have well and trully paid for themself . The talica is very smooth and silent and really a shit hot reel that has serious grunt.

However the tyrnos has not let me down and has landed my biggest reds (over 12kgs) with no fuss .

EDIT having re read your post stick with the 16 it will cope but just use 1 hook.

I actually disagree with that

Thu, 2012-06-14 05:57

I got one for the old man for bottom bashing. A pe6-8 one too, as I thought the smaller pe ( i think 3-4?) one was far to flimsy (my bro has this one). I thought it would be a good mid range setup, and match it with a tyrnos 20 with pe4, but I used it in exxy a few weeks ago, and I can't wait to get rid of it.

There is no power in this rod. It is actually hard, SLOW work bringing up a decent fish on this rod, and subsequently, many were lost to Noahs. you can't get a good size pump/stroke with it, and it flexes all the way down through the grip and near the reel seat.

I think bcf needed a good brand jigging rod to flog in their stores for sub $200, so bulk bought these.

After reading a bit about the guys that sucessfully target XOS reds I am going to ditch the torsa and heavy braid in favour of mono.  I bought a penn baja special 113hn and will load it with 55lb schnieder.  I cant argue with the sucess of mono yet because all my reds have been under size.

Looked at the jigging master

Fri, 2012-06-15 13:14

Hi tot,

I looked at the Jigging Master Ocean God. They have 3 models in that one. Which one were you refering to? I saw a youtube clip     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsQNI4-RE14&feature=related . Nice looking rod. Thats a lot of flex for a 20kg rod!! Looks nice and light too. With the Talica 12, is it worth getting the 2 speed. How often would you use this and is i just something that would fail on the reel? What PE would you guys recommend? The 3-4 seems most popular. The youtube clip looks like the 1.5-2. I havent has a chance to llok at the Monster mesh yet but next time im in town I will check them out. Cheers for all the info. Went out yesterday and found a nice reds patch. First reds on the boat since I bought it. Stoked. Not huge ones but reds none the less.

Braxi , i went for the red

Fri, 2012-06-15 18:42

Braxi , i went for the red (little red ridding hood we call it , as I didnt want to get bricked with 2 hooks) it is exceptional!! My boat was towed around by big noah's for ages after we eventually realised that we were not gonna get the wind on back after our recent trip north (happened 3 times) .

Had to swap users as was really giving me some curry . On the old combo (tyrnos live fibre) I would have been out of action nearly straight away but running pe6 diawa boat braid (thanks till) it was on for as long as I wanted ,just not raised as we suspect big big tigers to be the culprit . The talica and L.R.R.H. will pull any red up , that i have no doubt about , but 300kg+ sharks hmm.......

I got mine from Oceanside and they had the full range in store and i would love to get a lighter model with a talica 8 for the metro.

good luck!!

Cant comment on the Ocean God

Fri, 2012-06-15 14:29

Cant comment on the Ocean God as I haven't used one, but on the two speed, my vote is a no.

I've never used the two speed function on any reel which has had it (always stick to the higher speed)

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

single speed is fine , as mentioned elsewhere you should be winding slack(ish) line back .

I'm actually a spin reel fan

Fri, 2012-06-15 20:11

I'm actually a spin reel fan for this type of fishing. My main outfit for this is a Twinpower 6000 FC on a custom built Samurai rod with 50 lb braid but I do have a heavier saltiga expedition on a t curve 400 with 80lb braid for the rougher country where the big breeds could brick you.

When fishing heavy drags especially the overheads want to roll a little due to the forces at play with the line running on top of the rod, it wants to roll unerneath. Not a big deal but noticeable. If line capacity is not an issue which it shouldn't be in this case a spin reel is definitely worth a look. Generally speaking though you may need to outlay more coin to get a decent one to hold up to this sort of fishing. That said a Saragosa 10000 would be a great reel for 50lb braid and on a t curve deep jig 200 spin would be a well balanced outfit.

Sat, 2012-06-16 00:11

sorry Bunny but I dissagree , 2 hooks with 150lb mono as rig gear ,  the drag on a 6 wont cut it . This I know as i have a 6 and a 5 twinpower fc and when either hook up (even one really big red) you WILL get burried  . Talica with the drag it has is WAY better than the twinpower , maybe TP8swpg but IMHO thats dreaming on 2 hooks.  Again just my opinion . And if reds are on spin then on what do you go overhead ??? Big reds can and have been caught in the 30's or less and if the rod rolls then hold the farker tighter(man up!!) once again JMO .

BTW nice fish in your avitar.

You are right mate. As I said it's my lighter rig for open country so when I need to I get the Saltiga out. Nothing wrong with overheads either, especially the Talica. I just prefer spin.

Spin for me!!  I use a Catalina 4500H  = high speed, and maybe give you a bit more of a chance.  Trout come up a lot faster than reds if you get the upper hand quickly.  Still get sharked often (too bloody often), last week we moved through 5 different spots, which all had sharks, before we found a spot where we managed to land a fish.

Why are sharks so bloody fussy, and refuse to eat trevally?

Would a Stella 10000 SW be too small for the missus to use?

Sat, 2012-06-23 14:15

Im trying to keep it smallish so that if we dont go out too far it wont be too heavy for her to use. The 18/20000 Stellas look quite bulky. Cheers. I think im sold on the Talica 12. Nice looking reel. And the Ocean God looks good. Its the most I will have spent on a rod but looks worth the $$$. Has anyone used the Finnor rods? I have seen the 50lb and 80lb rods in town and down at Exxy. Both shops raved about them. And they retail for around the $200 mark. The are a very light stick and it looks like heaps of grunt. Any one used one?

Yes I have used the Ahab.

Sat, 2012-06-23 18:34

Yes I have used the Ahab. They are a great rod and you won't be dissapointed. If you are sold on the Talica I suggest looking at the smaller models since you are looking to go a little lighter. The Tac 10 or even 8 should hold enough line. I toyed around with the idea of a Tac8 with 50lb braid for this type of fishing for the missus and it would have been perfectly fine. Ended up getting a Ryoga bay jigger instead and glad I did.

On that note I recommend you check out the Saltiga star drags out. The Z30 is arguably a better reel than the Tac8 and it is slightly better balanced. The standard 30 will also be fine and will hold plenty of broad for the job.

Good luck!

ive made it into a tackle shop

Tue, 2012-07-10 15:15

And the guy showed me the Saltist Demon Blood rods in the O/H. Nice rods, half the price of the Jigging Masters and nice and light. Which to choose. And I had a look at the Daiwa LD30, seems similar size to the Talica 12. Any good or bad points between the two? The Daiwa seems like a solid little reel. But so does the Talica. The LD30 felt like a nice pair for the Demon Blood PE3-5. Do you think the 3-5 is to heavy? They also have the 2-4. Doesnt seem like too much difference. Cheers.
