I've yet to really explore this.

But I've got a few places where sidescan will be really interesting. There is a  little pinnacle in in the bay at Jakes, at Kalbarri, which can be surprisingly difficult to exactly nail. I'm going to drive around it to build a picture, put one of the 3-d touch waypoints on it when sitting off to one side, then try to nail it with conventional sonar. Should be interesting. I love the detail in that RV-100 sidescan--looking at Downscan and conventional, sure, you see you are going over lumpy bottom, but the sidescan shows you are just actually clipping one side of it--or at least that's how I read it.

That's how I read it too. I find with the down and side scan that choppy water can kill the image. Especially sidescan. On calm water the detail can be incredible. I have been able to see the ripples on the sand on some images. I have had one occasion where the sidescan lit up with fish on a lump 25 meters off to the side and obviously the conventional sonar missed it. Fish show up as a hot white. So it is useful if the conditions are right.
