My father and I are planning to drive up to the ashburton river and travel the dirt tracks to fish the rivers between onslow and the fortescue. does anyone have any advice on what time of year to go? Is it worth taking my 5 meter boat? and if so is the offshore any good? are there any barra's? cheers

Take the tinny
Plenty of good fishing in and out of the creeks,Ashburton has a shallow mouth so be careful.Plenty of islands and reefs outside that your 5 metre will be handy for.Forescue has a good steep ramp and produces fish outside all the time ,alot launch from there to the monties .Look out for mozzies and sandflies they will eat you alive if you dont take precautions.Pick up firewood from inland as there is bugger all around at the camping spots
There are two types of people ,do'ers and watchers
Right now the do'ers are the doing it
And the watchers are watching us do it

Barra are a bit scarce south
Barra are a bit scarce south of Fortescue, but there are a few.
Mangrove jacks and cod are abundant. Was down there a couple weeks ago and caught about 30 jacks and 50 cod in one day. All released!
Try and go on neap tides. Those creeks turn into red mudslides on big tides
