Anyone else noticed??

That the upper reaches of the river are not worth fishing for at least 2 weeks after Swanfish? I've been fishing the upper reaches for over 10yrs & have them sussed out to the point where I can almost guarantee getting into plenty of good fish but for 2-4 weeks after Swanfish the fishing in the upper reaches is terrible. I'm not a butthurt Swanfish competitor, I've never been in it & I don't plan to go in it at any stage but I am wondering if the benefits to the community are outweighed by the obvious negative effect that it has on the upper sections of the river. I can't comment on the lower sections (Maylands to Freo) as I don't fish them often enough to an opinion about Swanfishes effects on those sections.

Don't want to upset you after reading your other post I don't fish swan at all but swan fish is about kids having a day out with dad and maybe win a prize what's the harm in that the river belongs to everyone sorry you you feel upset at some comments but that's life

If you want to talk community

If you want to talk community benefits, i think that the more people involved in fishing and using the river on a regular basis will help to highlight the need to take action towards the real threat to the system and fish stocks - pollution and development.

Never had any issue with

Never had any issue with anything you have ever written Tomcat, as I said in the other post it's only a select few.

I'm all for kids fishing & maybe winning a prize, there's no harm in that at all. I've got 4 boys of my own & I think it's great that they all fish with me & through fishing have learnt more about the environment & wildlife. Unfortunately though Swanfish is dominated by adults fishing, most of them don't have kids with them at all. Many of those adults set a bad example for the kids that are in the comp by littering the banks & parks around the river. I stopped off just near Redcliff bridge for a fish at 4am this morning only to find tents pitched along the banks (no problem there) & mounds of rubbish strewn around everywhere. I stopped at 5 places between Redcliff Bridge & Guildford Rd Bridge & it was the same piles of litter at each spot. I fished each of those spots on Friday arvo & they were pretty clean. I know that's the minority spoiling it for the rest as it is in most cases but it really doesn't send the best message to the kiddies. I'd like to see Swanfish focused more as a child friendly event. Take away all prizes for adults & make it so adults cannot register unless they are fishing with a child.

As for the comp focusinig attention onto pollution & development, I think that is possible but seeing all the crap lying around on the banks this morning I think the message being sent is that the river is fair game. If the fisherfolk are leaving thier crap lying around, the rest of the community isn't going to think we care very much about the rivers health.

Anyway, that's just my opinion. I'll shut up & go back to reading now.

More weigh in areas along the bank. Imo bream are not any good to eat but my main issue is you land say a big breeding female of 45 cm but they usually die/ are dead before weigh in Im not saying one every bay. Just dont find it very sustainable

How about competitors must have a live fish tub. Keeping the fish alive for weigh in, then just simply releasing them after. Rule 1. Must keep all fish alive for weigh in!

but how many average joe fishermen are going to go out and buy a bait tank pump and battery to power it for a once a year comp??? its getting away from the reason this comp started a fun family fishing event!
