My first thought is that this brings it into line with current rules regarding charter fishing for demersals so no biggy there. Plus they have a boat maximum of 24 which is a positive.
My second second thought is that I don't see Bei Wan Xeng and his mates visiting from Szechuan Province going out for a morning's diving for crays.
I can't see there being a huge takeup for this as a lot of our tourists can't even swim letalone dive. Any tourists that it does attract to come here would be a bonus to our growing tourism economy.
That being said, catch rated also need to be monitored and evaluated carefully to identify any loopholes in the system.
Agree regarding overseas visitors. Can't see this being an international drawcard. Can see the possibility of locals taking advantage of good weekend weather to get a feed of out-of-season crays.
With regards to loopholes, if the charter companies start pushing the boundaries, then it should be scrapped. It doesn't appear Fisheries are getting any extra revenue for this, but they will now be lumped with ensuring compliance. That's an additional cost, paid for by other fishermen, for the benefit of the Charter industry. One thing i'd like to see is that the 24 crays can only go to paying customers - not to the skipper, owner or crew. I'm assuming the purpose is to aid the charter industry, not to ensure those employed have 365 days a year access to crays.
I'm all for helping the charter industry and keeping the revenue ticking over, expecially in slow months, but if compliance ever becomes and issue, scrap the whole lot.
The original post is gone but Im assuming this is about charter boats being able to access a bag limit outside the traditional season.
Personally, I think its a good thing, but like any set of rules theres a choice between putting together a set of rules which are workable for the intended purpose
and making a set of rules that makes it so difficult for the genuine users that it forces either law abiding people to "bend" the rules (like Bret Carters case) or simply not be workable as
theyre too onerous. If you pay alot of bucks to do a once a year Abrolhos trip, nice to be able to put a feed of crays on for the passengers.
Dive Charter boats taking paying divers out must own a comercial licence at large cost and haard to come by, also up until recently the divers who took crays of a dive charter vessel had to also have a recreational cray licence..
I misinterpretted your post when I first read it and wrote that commercial cray diving licences have not been issued for over 20 yrs Correct, it is an expensive and difficult game to be in, anything that helps make it a better experience without causing a problem, Im all for.
sounds sus to me, dive boat is a SPV only, no commercial lic.
Fisheries guide states that you must have a lic to take crays. to me if you are going to let them take crays out of season ( Rec ) then there must be a 1 day cray lic that they can buy ( can be part of the cost per person on boat ) catch numbers must be recorded. sound like BS to me.. just saying
does this mean they dont have to clip the cray tails , and who is measuring them before they come onboard , thinking about the bloke (a rec diver) that has been doing battel with fisheries for measuring his crays on board his boat
Another dive charter vessel also announced months ago same thing. Good luck to them operating post June 30 to Mid October and getting the numbers.
I dont know how much it is for a day out on the one mentioned but the other one I know charges $95 and runs a well oiled operation. Simple yet best value and good mannered on all regards.
Given the 5% and numbers dont get near it perhaps a review etc.
The closed season does let me focus on other items in life. In saying that the wife may think otherwise if there was a change for rec fishers
rec this season or last will have hit the 5% ceiling in our TAC I have no doubt about that given the uptake in rec licences in the last few season
in principle I'm not for any commercial operation that makes money getting a share of the recs small 5% , especially if all other recs don't have access at the same time or the %is not grown to reflect the charter componenet of it
if this was to become the norm how many other charts would jump onboard ?? how would it be allocated to charters ?/ their is about 100 in wa , what if even 30% applied to do this ??
would recs be ok with a lower bag limit ?? less pots per licence ?? shorter seasons to accomodate charters taking a bigger slice of that 5%into the future ??
the big question at present is how recs can gain more access over that 5%
will we need to buy it back at commercial rates ??
By the number of reports I have seen this season I also think the rec take of crays would be getting quite high, may be not reaching the 5% allocation yet but certainly above 3.5 3.8.
I and I think a lot of rec catchers would be very very upset if the 5% allocation was diminished so that the charter operators could run a cray catching safari out of season, if it is alright for them to do this why can't rec catchers have their season extended hmmmm.

Meh. Amateurs are allocated
Meh. Amateurs are allocated 5% of the tac and we don't even get close to that. Opening the whole fishery to amateurs year round wouldn't hurt.

Isnt this the same blokes company that wanted all fishing banned
Within 5nm of the coast a few years back as extractive activities ruined the scuba diving experience?
