Saw a few post about it on facebook too, great work by fisheries again!
Don't understand why anyone would bother risking their boat for a couple of crays

Never mind the $1000 per cray fine.
not worth it at all.

this sort of thing needs to make the news
and front page of the papers so that is more widely seen.
not everyone uses facebook or the internet.

i dont think their boats are
i dont think their boats are confiscated forever, just until the pending investigations are dealt with, then they will get them back.

Fisheries should sell the boats IMO
Hefty penalty, you bet people have been warned enough about stealing other peoples crays pots etc.
We all tend to think this is the penalty for stealing just a few crays, what's to say these people have not been doing this for some time and making more than just a couple of quid sorry dollars over quite a period of time.
You could make some serious money if you where selling to a couple of restaurants around town I don't think these people are silly enough to risk such a big penalty for just a couple of extra crays. That's my view any way and I think the boat an trailer should be forfeited s well as a decent fine.

The boats should be either
The boats should be either scrapped or sold for charity, these thieving scum deserve everything that comes their way.

My Understanding
I have never been told this by a reliable source so has to be taken with a grain of salt.
When you get busted all the gear is confiscated. Court case etc done and fine handed out. If you cant/dont pay the fine then your gear is sold to cover costs. If you do pay it your gear is returned.
Anybody out there know for sure?
Sometimes when the water is quiet, you can hear the fish laughing at you !

Dont know about that.A
Dont know about that.
A fisheries officer is able to seize gear accociated with the offence. It is then up to the court to determine, as an additional punishment, if the gear is forfeted, or returned to the owner. Failure to pay the fine/cost would occour some time later and be delt with accordingly.
But there is a lot of latitude in the laws to permit the magistrate to tailor their judgment to suit the circumstances.

If the owner is able to get
If the owner is able to get their boat back there should be a condition that they first need to pay for a large vinyl wrap denoting them as a pot thief and have this placed on the hull for a minimum of two seasons. I'm thinking bright pink.
Officially off the Pies bandwagon

IDENTIFICATION
We've had pots pulled and taken this year.
Just thinking - there should be an easier way of identifying/associating a boat in the act of pulling pots, with the pots being pulled.
So, perhaps you should have to display the rego numbers of the pots you are entitled to pull (much like boat rego numbers) so they are clearly visible to anyone watching you pull 'your' pots?
Have seen a few shadies out there pulling different pots (float colours etc) on different days, but, couldn't be sure if they were up to no good....
Just a thought....

Yes - I've thought the same.
Yes - I've thought the same. I was behind Garden Island fishing this week and watched a boat slowly cruise up to craypots floats.
He could of just been looking for his pot floats, but when he spotted me taking an interest in what he was doing,he moved away quickly.
He didn't come back,so I can only think that he was going to pull someone else's pots... but then maybe not. There's no way of knowing?

one can only speculate
what goes on but when you see on a consistant basis a largish dark boat with sonar on his way back ,same place that we got our pots at @4.45 in the morning and we know the time to get out there ...then ...... wednesday they were back at the bent st. ramp even earlier........
