Read it thismorning and thought the same. Can't be long before they pull the top of it off. Still an OK shore dive apparently.

Like most things, the uneducated few spoil it for the majority.

Fully support a fisheries van parked at the enterance and some officers standing at the start on the jetty with an open fine book though I dare say it would be like the recent crab fines "we ran because we thought we couldn't take any"

its sad to see such a blatant disregard for cleanliness..is it so hard to take the fish to the beach and clean them there...

dived there several times in the past.. always see lion fish among the pylons..

Places like this should be made catch an release only. Still enable people to fish for salmon and the likes but prevents the bloodbath.

Nah people should just stop being greedy messy bastards. They all had buckets, not hard to put a fish in a bucket to bleed out. They shoul all be fined with littering or the same fine attached to graffiti. At least the local government will get some sort of kick back as well as teaching a lesson

A few make the rest look bad, and give so much Ammo (pun intended) for the "sea kitten" brigade to ban everyone from the jetty.
Watch this space because Greenies are sure to blame all fisherman for this. PEW just love this stuff.
Catch and release IMO would be a great idea, but then I don't ever eat salmon (and still wonder why others do).

Emu Point Fish Cleaning station

Tue, 2016-04-12 11:37

Check the following link.  This has been based in Albany at Emu Point since 2003... so I'm sure there's feedback about how good and  what could be improved upon. Why this type of arrangement is not standard at all quality ramp facilities and popular fishing locations such as the Ammo Jetty begs the question to be asked.   Not only that but it's multiple station. All those boat parking fees etc could be well used with establishing this type of set up. Recfishwest should be championing these type of facilities.

Cleaning station - now that's what's needed

Tue, 2016-04-12 17:19

Thanks for pasting the link. I think that one of those type of cleaning stations would go a hell of a long way to solving the problem.

Place it about 3/4 of the way out along the jetty so the stupid lazy bastards don't have to walk to far to use it, (other wise they won't) together with a nice big sign stating catch limit is 4, and stop being bloody filthy pigs by making such a bloody mess and bleeding out your catch on the jetty.

It has been said by others "what about the black squid ink marks", black marks do not have the same dramatic effect on humans as does blood markings. There is something in our make up that brings on quite emotive issues when we see pools of blood.

We, as humans don't like seeing it.

The premier recently announced that he thought that Mandurah had been done badly by the allocation of royalties for regions money.

Yes I know the jetty is not in the shire of Mandurah, however it's close and to put something like this in would be putting some weight behind his words about the use of royalties for regions money and some areas missing out.

I'll say it again, in the short term I think the problem could be solved by fisheries showing the flag.

Get out of the office post a van at the end of the jetty so it is in plain sight along with a ranger so all who go on the jetty can see them.
Then have a nice big sign saying to the effect if you bleed out your fish on the jetty you are committing an offence against the shire by defacing the jetty.

Fisheries officers to ask all going fishing on the jetty "are you aware of the catch limit".

another news story

Tue, 2016-04-19 07:56

another news story sensationalising this way out of proportion imo

how do these pc people think kids managed for years when animals where killed on farms and backyards ?
in the last few decades we seem to have forgoton that once upon a time most backyards had chooks, ducks , turkeys etc that where bred and killed for food ,
it was not unusual to see animals, like horses , cattle , sheep & dogs etc put down with a gun , rabbits roos & foxes need culling etc ,

fish also where killed with abit of blood spilled
this at ammo jetty needs to be cleaned up , but this story is way over the top pc imo

god only knows where we will be in another 20-30 years, if this type of idealogy keeps going

While that is true Hezzy and I agree

Tue, 2016-04-19 08:33

I too have been on the farm slaughtering for food. But nothing went to waste. We were never let loose in the cattle yard with a gun to KILL,KILL,KILL until they finally escaped. We did do that in the salaughterhouse but from memory 100% of what we slaughtered was used. Unfortunately I can say atleast 60% of the salmon being caught in the frenzy will go to waste. From personally witnessing this disgraceful sight and watching the video I have to agree that it gives fisho's a bad name.

BUT... the people I have seen catching salmon are NOT fisherman! If they were then instead of the fish laying on the concrete flapping to death they would have been bled and iced upon capture. These brainless fools are only interested in who has "the biggest dick"! Or should I say smallest!  What the hell are they going to do with so many salmon, they are not a 5 star table fish. Seriously if 90% of the salmon caught locally by way of catch and leave to die in the sun are actually consumed  and not let to go to waste then good on them. Yet I doubt it. our herring stocks have been deplenished due to the same CATCH,CATCH,CATCH mentallity. Even though salmon are not high on the food table they are part of an Eco system.

I am no greenie but we were always taught, "you kill it, you eat it" and therefore less was wasted.

sandbar lol no issue with

Tue, 2016-04-19 08:58

sandbar lol
no issue with the kill it only if you can use , hence i dont target tailor or skippy along with many other species

having killed and cut down cattle and sheep myself , id be interested to know what you did with the heads, hide, guts and hooves if you used 100% of your animals ??
we never ate those bits, but they where used to bury near fruit trees or other garden plants , to rot down naturally

im not advocating letting anyone loose with a gun to slaughter animals will nilly , but how many blokes have shot at rabbits on the run or set shots under a spotty with a .22 ?? ??? trying to shoot the little buggers before they go down a burrow ??

big school of salmon moving through is a similar thing , they may not hang around and blokes will go to market to catch them while their within reach ?? often iv seen blokes on a beach do this to a travelling salmon school , no one seems to mind if 20-30 blokes follow em up a beach casting and catching over the top of each other ??

these guys are contained on the jetty and it needs to be done better , but the angle of this story is skewed imo
i have no issue with these guys catching their bag limit , fishers are still allowed to use them as they see fit , so people will eat them even when others dont rate them highly as eating fish

if done in vacola style their quite ok for months , some will be kept for bait , as not everyone buys all their bait , especially for crays

as pros iv seen salmon sit in the sun in a pile on the beach or in spud bins for hours before they have been trucked to canning , often taking up to 10-12 hours before being processed , nothing doen about it

ammo jetty is right under peoples noses and so its getting people/media attention

im all for recfishwest and the fisheries dept being pro active in stopping excessive abuse , but imo that article has gone over the top sensationalising this issue

this issue needs a sensible response , not a dramatic alarmist greenie bandwagon call to emotions which is what that is imo

Agree again, a sensible response,

Tue, 2016-04-19 09:08

When I say 100% was used that was when I was working in the Abboitoir where we had the machines to process, I am sure we had a use for everything. Can't remember every detail though. I remember where the tallo went, horrible shit that is!

The people who target the salmon on the beach casting over each other are generally true fisho's who will immediately return to their catch and treat it in a way for further use not waste. I would like to hear any of these fisho's driving 4-5hrs in search of fish, camping in the back of the car eating out of tins and shitting in a plastic bag. They are not hunters, they are on the bandwagon.

I am sure the salmon schools that went wasted in tubs for hours on end were cat food.

My real arguement is fish being wasted and I believe that alot of this,  that is happening locally, will be wasted.

Agree with hezza that it has

Tue, 2016-04-19 10:17

Agree with hezzy that it has been sensationalised  ridiculously.

I also agree that something needs to be done in a proper manner but this needs to be addressed by recfishwest.

Sandbar your argument about fish being wasted. I would agree with you that is not a good thing to happen. However how do we know it's being wasted. These people obviously rate the fish on the table otherwise they wouldn't be keeping their bags repeatedly. I for one don't have a problem so long as they stick to the limits. I am sure that some have been sticking to the limits and some haven't. It's a shame for those who play by the rules as others are spoiling it for them and all of a sudden "anyone who fishes ammo" is getting a bad rep.

I am tired of the racial generalisations as in any group there are people with good and poor behaviour and the ones with the poor behaviour ruin it for the rest. To me it's very unfortunate that a lot of people, particularly on FB are ruthlessly making racial comments about this whole issue, and the media are certainly fuelling this.

I also think it's a tad harsh saying they're not hunters and just on the bandwagon because they didn't drive down south. I have never fished ammo before but i know a few fishos Aussie and Asian and Middle Eastern who fish ammo jetty for salmon, stick to their limits, clean up their rubbish and do this because they live locally. They are true respectful fishermen/hunters. Then when they have the time to get away from work or family etc they will go down south and do your camping/hunting thing. Not everyone can fish down south exclusively.

Oh well it's a hot topic. Everyone has their opinion and it is going to be a different opinion. At the end of the day I think there needs to be more involvement by RFW and education is the key. Then following up with law enforcement and fines.

Again I agree hezzy there are more issues at hand which our  society could address, so if we teach our own kids the right thing, then they may one day be in a position to pay it forward and enforce and implement good principles and influence those around them.

WHOA!!!

Tue, 2016-04-19 10:43

adding "racism" to this is entirely out of field. And as for bag limits, well that has not been mentioned either.

Also if you read my posts through then you will read that I too am ok with this IF it is not going to waste. As for the "hunter" spill, well I have not met a decent hunter that see's a flock, gathering, herd, school and try to annihilate it as quick as possible. Most fisherfolk will take the time to preserve their catch in a way that will keep it edible or reusable for bait, burley mixes or whatever. I would like people to go down to the jetty, As I have done, and watch what takes place. It is not fisherman catching a feed for the family or enjoying some catch and release. It is a bloodbath which is what this topic is about which in turn tars all fisho's with the same brush and gives the greenies more ammunition to try and stop us from recreational  fishing. They have already stopped us using live maggots! What a fukken joke! They don't need more ammo to back them up yet that is what is being displayed down the jetty. I know what takes place elsewhere but this is in the public eye and the people catching need educating.

I was under the impression it was because of health codes and a lot of shops were not allowed to sell them live. Ironically, most pest stores sell them for bird and reptile food, along with lots more insects. You can even order them online if you do a search. As for the topic of the thread, I don’t think anything good will happen until the local council or fisheries start being involved in these issues. It was pretty obvious the Salmon were on their way, and from previous years example, these divisions of the public service should have been better prepared to deal with the situation.
