Ally paint oxidization

Just noticing on the 30 month old boat that the paint around the windscreen is starting to bubble in quite a few areas where the stainless bolts are used to secure it. There is no sign of Durolac used and everywhere else it seems to be used. Any suggestions on what the best thing to do? Cheers!

Sounds like corrosion

If the windscreen is held in by a metal strip, which it probably is , then it will more than likely be corrosion of the metal, and not a problem with the paint.

You can check by taking a sharp tool, or pin and just scrape away the top of the bubbles and see what is underneath, it will either be a rust colour if it is steel, or a white powder, and no you can't sniff it, if it's alluminum.

To get rid of it you will either have to replace the strip if it's replaceable, or remove the bolts and grind away the corrosion and reprotect the area.

The sooner you get rid of it, the better, it's like metal cancer, and just goes nuts if left alone.

Have fun :(

I find it to be electrolosis, any foreign metal touching ally and it will happen. Plastic between the stainless and ally should stop it.

Actually thats what duralac is for, its a jointing compound. Seeing as it won't hold a film of water like rubber, its even better.

you are never going to ever completely stop it from happening but try using tef-gel its even better than duralac

Haven't tried tef-gel, I do know though with Duralac, they recommend reapplication periodically.

Pain in the rear!!

The BEST way I found to avoid it is get all your holes cut before you get your boat painted AND wash your boat very meticulously after EVERY use I always use a pressure cleaner on mine and wash everything even everything on the trailer!! Might take you a bit longer but defianately worth it in the long run!! Never had a problem boat still looks brand new (apart from where I may have hit a jetty or two) :) :)
