Albany January 2026
Hey Fisho Fam
Im seeing if anyone can give me info on fishing in Albany. We have booked a week and a bit stay in Albany in early January with a heap of farming friends. Im considering taking the big boat (615 Barcrusher) or just the dingy. Happy to share any info I have in exchange or buy someone a beer when im there haha!!
- If possible I wanted to get out and try get a dhu or snapper something decent to eat. Is ground hard to come by? Looking at the map it drops off pretty quick
- If I take the big boat whats the best boat ramp to launch from?
- Keen for some squid, been lookin on youtube and everyone seems to go to emu point?
- Years and years ago when I went down there as a kid we used to get crabs in the kalgan river in January, still get plenty of crabs down there?
Appreciate the help
Josh

Yup, emu point for squid and kgs
Out around the islands plenty of blue grouper and Queen snapper, never been further offshore but nannies are generally deeper targets

Albany
take a rain coat and a good warm jacket. I've been there 3 times at differnt times of the year and it rained every time. If you good further east to Esperance you will definietly need a jacket. i work on building a ship loader there in summer and froze with the southerly winds every morning. Did get a snapper and a blue grouper in the harbour from the companies little dinghy, and in work hours, the boss was a bit peeved as he hadn't caught anything. Go north youg man go north.

Albany Fishing
Boat ramps: Emu Point, Albany Waterfront Marina, Or Frenchmans Bay.
Prioncess Royal Harbour is good for squid, KG's flathead etc. Head out King George sound and target the head land drop offs.
Michaelmas island or Breaksea island are well worth the trip on calmer days.
Can launch at Lower King river bridge for access to Oyster Harbour.
Old fishermen never die they just smell that way.

In terms of ramps, in the
In terms of ramps, in the size boat you have it will be quicker to launch and Emu Point or in Town, don't waste your time driving out to Frenchmans Bay as the drive in the car takes longer than the drive in the boat.
Ramps are shit too.
You can also launch at Two Peoples Bay which will give you closer access to less fished waters, but its a beach lanch.
Offshore, once you get past 60m the botton is pretty flat so finding ground can be hard.
The easy thing to do is fish the obvious structures like Maudes or Eclipse Island. Not too close to them, particularly Maudes if your new to the area.
You will need some decent weather to get far offshore.
Also, the wind down there can tend to blow the same way all day, so our old rule of thumb was to drive into it on the way out so the way back is easier.
ie if its going to blow east all day, head east.
If you have deep drop gear, the Albany Canyons or Two Peoples Canyon are good areas to look.

There used to be, but I haven't tried in more than 10 years.
