The Age Old Question S vs D

 Hi lads,

I'm in the market to spoil myself with a fancy reel and just wodering what would you pick as a spin in the 4000 size range?

Does anything compare to the mighty Stella or Saltiga or do they rein supreme - and if so can someone shed some light on which and why.

Any input would be great cheers.

4000 size shimano or daiwa?
4000 Daiwa Catalina silver model is my all time favourite reel. Alan Hawk rates it aswell as a second tier to daiwas flagship reel Saltiga. New Catalina just released last few months I'll be looking to upgrade soon

Rarenium

In my opinion the Stella's in the small sizes are not really great value.  I've got a couple of Rareniums, 2500 and 4000.  They are superb reels.  Got the 4000 spoiled with 4kg mono, caught heaps of great fish including a world record salmon and a 12kg mulloway.

Plus 1 for the 4000 Catalina. Beauty of a reel, Alan Hawke has a glowing review of it. Definitely value for money

 +2 the Catalinas are great

+2 the Catalinas are great reels (I have a 4500 and 6500 of the original model and considering another 4000)

unless I was heading off to exotic locations for GT and Dogtooth I wouldn't go a Stella or Saltiga (bar 6 numbers coming up tonight - then my new boat would be adorned with them )

IMHO the Stella is smoother

IMHO the Stella is smoother and the warranty from shimano is hard to beat.

having saif that i own 6 saltiga , 4 of them for 10 years and fish with it atleast once a week.

Never have serviced them  ( yet ) and did not bother with carbontex washer.

originally bought for sambo jigging but ended  up using and abusing it every trip. ( ie snag, big stingray , shark etc..)

They all still work perfectly !!

so i am sold on saltiga...having said that i like the old model better...solid metal construction...

the new one got  more technology ..but i dont have it for that long ...well only got it for a few years..so we will see...

so if you look after your gear well..i think Stella is the go..smooth , powerful and looks great

if you are lazy like me..who fish till 3 am ...then just crash when i get home then buy saltiga..i just rinse it after every trip. it seem to work still
( probably will jinx myself now )

I have both the 2013 Stella

Tue, 2016-07-12 00:46

I have both the 2013 Stella 5000HG and 2012 Catalina 4000H.. They are both very smooth but the Catalina 4000 is such a top performer for the money it's hard to ignore.

If you can find some shops that are clearing out the silver catalinas at a great price then your on to a winner..
