Advice for Metro Macks!

Hey guys,

With all this exciting news about metro macks and the fact that I finally got my 4.55m fibreglass runabout + 25hp mariner working I am dead keen to give it a go this weekend. Just a few questions to ask for trolling around perth:

  • what are the best/target water temps?
  • best depths?
  • trolling speed?
  • where would be a decent (calmer/safer) place to try out for an inexperienced boater with the above boat! judging by the macks caught ballooning i'm under the assumption i may not have to venture too far out?

I've only had some experience trolling in kalbarri where we'd target 22-23 deg, trolling at about 6-8knots...and just wondering if it would be similar to around perth

Would love to hear what the pros reckon!

Feel free to PM me if you want ;)

 Cheers,

Jus

Tue, 2011-04-05 18:36

i go out from hilliarys on the outside of the 3 mile and troll north or south ive got a 445 its safe but not if swell is up have a read of the local charts and use a gps if possible

ive been targeting ground 8 to 20mtrs water temp was 24 yesterday you can look for bait balls but never had any luck around them yet

5 to 12 knots i try to vary it

its not as easy as people on here make out

ive trolled up 25 hours in the last 4 trips  and had one hit

very frustrating to see all these fish caught

was out yest avo for 3.5 hours trolling not even a sniff

but its good to be out on the water fish or no fish

Absolutely shitloads of bait out there off Hillarys, Ocean Reef at the moment. Picked up one and dropped two others this morning before work.

Will I need all the safety gear to get out there legally (ie. epirbs, uhf radio etc)?? I've got life jackets and that's about it!

You down there now

Hi Jus

Remeber you from the drinks at the Tabrey some year odd back.

I have a very simple philosophy on your question. It doesnt matter what the Law says. Go out with as much safety gear as you can. You only have one life, and taking a risk is not worth it. But as I recall and will stand corrected within 5nm from shore you dont need some of the gear but I cant remember which. Look up your RST manual or go and get another and read it. That sounds rude in text but mate its only meant to keep you safe.

I am sure someone will tell you exactly what is needed, but more is better, safer, and you dont want to test out what you might have needed.

cheers for the safety

Wed, 2011-04-06 14:23

cheers for the safety comments guys - what i was really meaning was "will the general trolling location require me to legally have an epirb/uhf on board?" this is mainly because i dont have either of the two as i only bought my boat + got my RST in 2008 () to chase mulloway in the swan at night!

i am fully aware of the safety requirements etc, i just have never been inshore around perth before and want to make sure that where everyone's suggesting doesnt legally need an epirb cos i cant afford one right now!
