Abrolhos Islands’ tourism developer gets nod from Minister to progress plan

Fisheries Minister Norman Moore has given approval for a Mid-West developer to shift plans for a land-based tourism facility to East Wallabi Island in the Abrolhos group.

Mr Moore said a public process to allow the State Government to consider alternative proposals to the original Long Island proposal had attracted no applicants.

“As a result, I have given Humfrey Land Developments the approval required to prepare plans for a proposed tourism development on East Wallabi Island off the Geraldton coast,” he said.

“This change of location was identified through a public process to allow scrutiny of the company’s transfer application.

“A notice of intent was advertised in State and national newspapers in April to give other parties the chance to lodge expressions of interest. We received no applications.

“I have now granted Humfrey Land Developments the approval to prepare a tourism proposal for East Wallabi consistent with its existing approval.”

The Minister said the company would need to revise its original development plan in order to meet the relevant environmental, heritage and planning approval requirements.

“Important consideration must be given to the Abrolhos Islands’ significance as a fish habitat protection area,” he said.

The Abrolhos Islands, an A-class reserve, are managed by the Department of Fisheries for the conservation of flora and fauna, for fishing and aquaculture purposes and for tourism.

“The obligations I have imposed on Humfrey Land Developments will provide an appropriate way to develop and manage environmentally sustainable tourism,” Mr Moore said.

“The State Government will ensure protection of the natural and cultural values of the Abrolhos Islands, which are a jewel in the crown of WA’s marine environment.

“It is now up to the developer to come up with a plan that meets all the necessary approvals still required, before any go-ahead can be given.”

Information on the islands is available in the Abrolhos Islands Visitors Guide, which can be read or downloaded at http://www.fish.wa.gov.au

Be realistic Tony. They're not going to put up anything cheap out there! You almost sound like a socialist?

I must admit I'm not really keen on the proposal myself but for other reasons.

far from a socialist mate,
just not into these $1000/day setups that give you the whole ecco experience without being allowed to touch the experience ( if you know what I mean....)

Dunno tony, I see your other thread about the super tax and it reads like you want capitalism for work and socialism for holidays.

I think you will find that Multiplex is about 2 years ahead already. Sources tell me that the Robert's family have already established a 'private' getaway over there. Explains why Tim & his family fly over there in his chopper now & then. Having said that i'm sure his new 88 foot "boat" will make the odd apperance there as well. Rob

XX has had his luxury pad on the eastern corner of Little Pigeon for quite some time with his huge jetty and all, amazing what the rich are allowed to do besides all the rules huh? It would seem that money buys you exclusive rights.
Leave the islands alone.....I used to be part of the tourist trade to the Islands and am glad I don't participate in helping destroy the joint anymore.

Leave it as it is in my opinion !

With the hoops that the developer will have to jump through to get approval to do anything .......its would have to be super expensive .

They couldn't build a new hotel on Rotto for the same reasons.......too many environmental factor's that priced the whole think out of this world !

Leave it as it is .......

breathing space for the Leeman Caravan Park. As Humpfeys bought the CP to turn it into a 4 star resort and Caravan Park with no semi-permanents, and if gets the Native Title lifted. He tried the same thing in Jurien Bay and Green Head but got knocked back, I think by the local council.

Sorry, think they should leave the Abroholos alone, as the average Joe blow will not be able to afford going there. I get a bit annoyed with developers and the mighty dollar, only targeting the wealthy, nothing seems sacred any more.

Do we have spell check on the site now????

Yeah I'm against it. If you want to snorkel with coral, go to Ningaloo. Those who can afford it can probably take their own boats out there anyway, it's not like it needs a resort as well. I quite like the Abrolhos the way they are, no need to make every island group a tourist destination. If they try to do this at the Monties I'll really hit the roof!

nothing is sacred anymore. iam not a greenie but as soon as they redevelop it it is not as if they can un develop it. the same is happening in bunbury at the moment with the waterfront. they want to change it and alter it for the sake of better land positioning for bigger buildings so they can line their pockets with money. the environment is such a fragile thing. even the slightest change will change it forever. sadly in this day and age, money is worth more than that to alot of people. If you turn a rock over, put it back where you turned it over from IMO
