? about whiting

hi
went down to ammo jetty last night with a friend and my son
set my son up with small hooks and he had a ball catching 1 dozen scaley macs
my ? is my mate caught a whiting it looked like a silver whiting but it had black rings all down its body what sort of whiting is this

trumpeter whiting can get some stong banded markings on it
can only find some drawings

Good find, but that one in your link is 'almost' the same, but the species over here is different (Sillago burrus rather than Sillago maculata). They look very similar, but if anything ours has even stronger banding. They used to be considered the same species (different sub-species) but now recognised as two species. Ours is correctly called 'Western Trumpeter Whiting'

i would double check that limit!! as im sure that would be classed as a bread and butter fish which has a limit of 30 here in the west! your link is to queensland so they would have different limits!!
