4 mile and 8 mile confusion

Where abouts are the 4 mile and 8 mile reefs in Geographe Bay measured from.  Been looking on navionics and any general area that I find that looks like the 4 and 8 mile reefs are more like 5 and 6 nautical miles respectively.  Am I getting the units confused between nautical and regular miles or are the names close but not quite 100% accurate?

If you look on your naval charts the four mile reef and eight mile reef are a lot closer to shore down Dunsborough end of the bay than directly out from Busso. so it's difficult to know where the names originate from and the accuracy of the measurement.

As far

as I know the 4mile is the line of reef that runs from about Meelup to Peppy beach at a depth of @15-19m. The 8mile is obviously further out and more of a depth of @30-35m.

Hope that helps.

Yeah its about that, I found the old artificial reef which interestingly is pretty much on the 4 mile reef line.  A bit of research has found that 4 mile is measured from the land at busso jetty and straight out, same for 8 mile.  Both near some decent contour lines but yeah I hear its still fairly flat country and you just have to sound it all out.  Not long now til Im on the water doing that...
