Hi guys,
Heading to Step in a few weeks, and just wondering if anyone has some advice as to how far you can get up with a 2WD, andshore luanch options. Tossing up whether or not to hire a 4x4 to take but if we can get close enough, and travel further via boat, that would be fine. Hoping to be able to drive in with a 2wd ute, as far as possible, set up camp, launch the boat and use that to get to spots.
Was there earlier in the year but can not remember where the track got into 4x4 territory.

how big isyour boat
you would only make it as far as the end off the corrigated track with a 2 wheel drive at this time of year as the sand will be dry and soft now and there aint no where there to launch and its probally the last place on earth you would want to get stuck there may be no one coming past for days . but if your boat is big enough it is a preety easy trip from denham takes the same time as driving there ,its about 54 kms by boat but check the winds this time off year as its usally howling easterlies

I would definately not
I would definately not attempt even the track in a 2WD, they are not designed for the flogging that the suspension will cop. Its a pretty rugged road depending on when it was graded last, and then when the road finishes, it soft sand.
Be aware also that it would not do your boat and trailer any good either. Plenty drag boats there, but it can't be good for them. I took a 4.2 m tinny up there a couple of years ago and i was cringing all the way. Made it very difficult to get up some of the dunes, and on the way back the boat trailer fell apart, guards fell off, nuts came loose, it ending up taking about 6 hours from Steep Point to Overlander, maybe longer if I recall right

no no no
definatly wouldnt even think about ay, pretty sure useless loop is restricted to the public anyway, just fill your boat up and go from denham like scottnofish said. if you havnt been up there before the track is a lllllllllot way longer than it looks on the map.
