1977 140 evinrude help
yes i did the search, didnt find the answer im looking for(maybe there isnt one)
posting for a freind.
he has a 1977 140 evinrude that has exellent compression on all cyl, and when going, goes like a rocket.
it has got starting issuses, it seems to flood very easy and once flooded it wont go unless you use areo start or the like.
looking for a mechanic that knows the old engines to do a tune/repair?
he has had the carbs of twice by so called mechs to clean, as that was the problem?????? well its not dirty carbs we now know!
i belive its the float levels that are out but he has been told they are not ajustible, (they do have metal tabs to bend to set float levels)
but i am not a mech so i will eat my words.
anybody know of a good, old outboard mech around the welshpool area?

float level
set floats level with your carb, where bowl screws on, is general setting, next time you have engine running spray aerostart on butterflies and around carb/reed block check for air leaks motor will jump up in rpm for split second, cant help with much more good luck

Have to go down and check on my boat tomorrow so will ask Craig, one of our local outboard mechanics, if he can put a finger on the problem.
Could even go as far back as coils/spark, where cranking the engine draws all the power giving you poor spark which is the cause of the flooding.

seems odd that aero start
seems odd that aero start will fire a flooded motor .. usually this only compounds the problem ..
maybe im wrong but ... if its just needing a higher Ron rating to make the fuel burn then id be trying a fuel additive as well to make it burn better .. plus new plugs and coil etc to add a better spark

Spoke to mechanic and he said to push the throttle lever right up to start it without choke. If it doesn't fire then give it just a tickle of choke.
To help prevent flooding tilt the motor up a bit.
Could be a number of things, needle and seats in carbies leaking, poor fuel pump not delivering enough pressure for float/needle and seats to work properly, could be leaking vacuum between cylinders through crankcase seals, poor spark plugs, coils or any number of minor things.
His final comment was why muck around with a 30+ year old fuel guzzling dinosaur when for the extra money you pay for fuel could buy a new more efficient and reliable one.

Could really be anything. 1.

1. Check compression
2. Check your spark.
3. Check the outputs on your electrics- Charge Coil, Stator (or points), Power pack, Iginition coils and leads.
Usaully a hard start is assiociated with a bad Charge Coil.
4. Once you have done that then you can check fuel lines and carbs etc.
Pesonally, if you want to get more info buy a manual off ebay for around $10. Which will tell you exactly what you need to know.

They will show you how to make a DVA meter which you will need.

he has had the carbs looked at twice so not sure its that, the fuel pump is a thinker!!!

exellent compression in all cyl, from memory 3-5psi below origanal, exellent spark with new plugs.
yes he has a manaul, thats where i found out about bending the metal tab to set the float levels.
all the local mech dont want to look at it!!! because its to old.
could also be the charge side of things???
one day when it wouldnt go and smelt of fuel really strong(flooded the guts out of it) batt got a bit low, i pulled the n70zz out of my 4wd and she fired up almost instanly,
there was a time delay in swapping batt over which i think allowed the excess fuel to evaporate.
but saying that we have tried fully charged batt one day and it wouldnt start.
best idea!!! buy a new motor i think.

Old motors especially Johnos
Old motors especially Johnos can have problems with the electrical wiring starting to break down. Nothing you can do other than to re wire the whole thing. But best to start again me thinks

thanks again for looking after the old boy mate, he is stoked with the level of service/proffesonal outlook you have shown him.
he is wrapped in the boat and has already bought a new hds8 for it and a few other goodies, as well as repainting it.
