140 Vro johnson

Just a quick one, what's everyone's thoughts on the old vro Johnson's ? My dad has one on the back of his pacemaker and we've had a few issues with it. Does anyone think they're worth fixing? I've been trying to get him to repower it for a while but he won't listen. It doesn't like traveling at 2200 revs, you feel it bog down and stall and then you have to restart it and give it some revs to get it going again. Is a 1988 motor.

Take the carbs off strip down
Take the carbs off strip down and clean thoroughly with brake cleaner and reinstall

Had one, no question whatever repower
You will just throw dollars at it forever .....the fuel savings alone warrant replacement by way of example my trips out used to use almost 100 litres of fuel for roughly a 50nm round trip, put on a new larger Yamaha 225 and now use less than 50 litres even on rough days .....pays for itself. And you being a super good son could buy it for him

I had a 90 VRO Johnson on my baron sportsman - a trip from pt Peron to SW bank was anywhere from 95-110 Ltrs
i repowered with a 115 4 st Yammy - same trip now 42 - 45 ltrs

Another vote for Sunshine
I had a yammy 175 2-stroke using roughly 2L per NM. Repowered to a yammy 200 4-stroke, now am avering around .95L per NM.
For the cost of the repower i could have bought a bloody lot of fuel, however what cost for piece of mind and reliability.

Def empower. Motor that old will cost big $ to fix if you can get the parts needed. And as mentioned peace of mind knowing you not going to get stuck out there waiting for a tow.

yep as above.....I own a 95
yep as above.....I own a 95 115 HP Johnno which I've rebuilt...I removed the VRO from mine as the diaphragm was worn and breaking down with small bits affecting the carbies. There quite easy to rebuild with parts and kits available from the states.
Biggest issue is Fuel use for sure....I avoid rough weather for this as if not on a good speed at plan the consumption is high.

Cheers guys. If i could afford it I'd get it repowered straight away for him. I've told him how much more fuel efficient for strokes are but he's pretty stubborn and doesn't seem interested. He just puts up with a noisy motor thats unreliable. I agree with everything thats been said here. I'm reluctant to take it past five fathom because i don't trust it.

Dad will only put up with it until he's on or beyond the 5fB and it fails. Then what? For safety sake have a decent and reliable power plant.

Try this one
Take out all the spark plugs and spray in a nice rich mix of salt water. Pop the plugs back in and let sit for a few weeks......
My wife understands why I clean my rods n reels in the shower....

Running some carby clean through the motor,clean and rinse out all fuel tanks and ensure fuel mix is right.
Nothing wrong with old stuff just haft too look after it a bit better,dam throw away society we live in now ,old stuff was built to last.
In a salt water environment in comes down to hours of use in the salt water and has it been rinsed out after use all the time.
Do a compression test ,need to treat it like any motor,back in the 70's they had a course in high school called PREVO (Prevocation) they would teach you all about Cars,stripping down starter motors alternators,electrics, concrete,bricklaying it was great learnt a lot . NOT ANY MORE !
