Ive found that i pick up way more bauldies drift baiting than bottom rigs! Dont know why but they love that offering right on the ocean floor for some reason...thats a fine fish mate.
Not So yesterday Ryan. Andys bottom rig was working well. Fish seemed to be right on the bottom and not willing to move up.
Even when Jigging the best results where when I worked the jig basically on the bottom with the rod only and no retrieve. If it came up too high you got nothing.
That's what i like about fishing, so many variables. For me, the last few trips in particular the d/baiting has cleaned up over the patternoster. As for jigs, i'm getting more fish well off the bottom........as mentioned so many variables!
I've just orderd another drift baiting combo, the exact same one so i can have a d/bait ready to go and a jig.....with the exact same outfits!

Yeah they are sweet rods ryan i was looking at one of those the other day! But they are very simular to my t-curve 10kg stick which is what i use for the light jigs now.......teamed up to a calcutta 400b.....very nice little outfit to use up to 120gm jiggs. Im running 20lb over mine at the moment and havent had a drama yet to go into a heavier line class. 7kg bauldie at abrolhos i got was on this combo and man that is fun......love the bigger pnikies on it as well!
Have you tried the sea rocks in the 90 and 120gm size? The red head one , well let me say that the pinkies run all over it for a taste. Same as the 120gm sea rock it orange, they love that to. One jig which i think has been developed expecially for this type of fishing (ive only got pnikies on it so far!) is the sacrifice leaf from diawa. Little bit expensive but it has a nice slow action when jigged ans after reading the write up on them they were desighned to catch dhuies! So they are also worth looking into to :) JMO

I use 5 and 6/0 mustards and 3, 4 and 5 bean sinkers for best results. I had the same dramas as tim with circles as there hard to get a hook up and hard tp get the bait on sweetly. i also flash it up with some lumo beads etc. If using mulies rig them head down! I bounced around like a ride at a kids party yesterday for little joy at all. Even though the sounder was telling me there was someone home at most addresses. Can someone direct me to where i can see a typical drift bait set up (diagram). Never done any more than hang an unwieghted Mulie out the back. Got to give this drift baiting a go.
No probs Craig, that picture was from my Western Angler feature article on 'Driftbaiting". You can get back issues of it, it was the June/July 2007 and i went through everything about driftbaiting.
I use 2 by 6/0 Mustad big red suicide hooks and have them snelled onto (70-90cm approx) of 80lb Jinkai "plus" which is a new harder trace line. I use a #5 bean sinker (max #6) and have that right onto the hooks but have a crimp approx 8 inches up from the hooks to stop the sinker from travelling up to my swivel (#4 ballbearing swivel)

Ryan why is that whenever some one puts a post up of a catch you have done it better and a better way it’s quiet frankly becoming a little irritating,, I understand you do well and you are a fountain of knowledge and other sorts but sometimes people just like to say hey look what I caught without you taking over the post of how you have done it better and a better way IMO!!!! Just my vent and my opinion!!!!

The current is a big factor to the depth of drift baiting. On days there is little current I think you could probably do it in almost any depth under 80m.
IMO opinion i drift bait and have great success in water up to the 50m mark max! This is what i find best: 6/0's snelled on 80lb leader and size 5 bean in water 40 to 50m 5/0's snelled on 80lb leader and size 4 bean in 30 to 40m 5/0's snelled on 60lb leader and size 3 bean in 20 to 30m 4/0's snelled on 60lb leader with no wieght at in 0 to 20m
I just make up 15 rigs of each and keep them in a berkey soft plastic wallet in different "labelled" sleaves so you can just simply change to which one is required in the depth you are fishing. My rigs are 1m in length to a swivel and my rod is always braid to leader of whatever to a clip swivel. That way you can just unclip the riga nd add a bigeer or smaller one thats needed.
I orginally looked at ryans rig and ive found that "I" like mine better but hey thats fishing and it was a great starting point to work from. I hope people dont think the same about my posts as i have always got something to say! But i never run other peoples methods down.........if it works for you share it to others but that doesnt mean you have to use it. The above is what i do and works a treat just try it out.....you can only make it better.
Broken down drift baiting rig:
Calcutta 400b and t-curve 6 to 10kg stick running 20lb braid to 1m length of 40lb penn10x. Attached to this is a small showgun clip swivel. Small showgun swivel to this attached to a 60lb penn10x leader Down to size 5 bean (400mm from hooks) the leader gets wrapped through the sinker twice so it cant move at all! Off the sinker, a lumo bead that runns between the sinker and hooks. 2 snelled 6/0 hooks with about 100mm in between depending on bait choice.
By having the sinker fixed it drifts down better doesnt snag as much and you still have enough leader betwwen the hooks and sinker to half hitch the bait if needed. Thats about it. Ill take some pics tonight if anyone wants to see "my' version of the drift bait rig. Cheers Chris.

I use exactly the same driftbait setup as Ryan. Only difference is I use wire for everything up here, especially when getting anywhere near those big coronation or coral trout that love reefing you on the bottom.

Only difference in my set up is I hide the bottom hook and trace inside the mantle of the squid. Just makes a slight improvement in the presentation. IMHO.
I use big circle hooks too and only ease the rod tip up to strike when drift baiting as Ryan or someone else eluded to earlier.

Fully agree Spess, i've been on fishing websites for years (reading/answering/sharing etc) and will continue for a long time. I like helping people and i also pick up info from others!!
In my opinion, Ryan and Spess (and others) have given me a wider knowledge of fishing. I've always been a boat/beach fisherman but from watching Ryan on FWA plus reading tips that He and Spess give, I've tried soft plastics plus fly fishing which I think, without them giving info, i would never have tried.
So thanks Ryan and Spess (and others), please keep it all coming.

Driftbaiting has produced more big snapper, dhufish, baldy's and blue spot flathead than my patternoster rigs....very noticeable!

I use big circle hooks too and only ease the rod tip up to strike when drift baiting as Ryan or someone else eluded to earlier.

Fully agree Spess, i've been on fishing websites for years (reading/answering/sharing etc) and will continue for a long time. I like helping people and i also pick up info from others!!

I've always been a boat/beach fisherman but from watching Ryan on FWA plus reading
tips that He and Spess give, I've tried soft plastics plus fly fishing
which I think, without them giving info, i would never have tried.
So thanks Ryan and Spess (and others), please keep it all coming.

Yep, its great seeing new photos of great fish from all over the state, country and now international angling scene. It's awesome where this site has got to and will continue to keep going with the great contributions of all the crew!!
Its great to have your fishing experience onboard Ryan, it provides a good local service to metropolitan anglers based upon your knowledge. Its that what sets you apart from the other major tackle retailers and why you have a successful business. Hopefully we can all take a little from your tips and advice. :)

Yeh keep em coming Ryan, i know for a fact that from fishing in small creeks in NE Victoia to the BIG DEEP BLUE up here in the Pilbara, im continuiously learning... wheather it be from trial and error or reading bit's and pieces on this site.... we' are all still learing as far as im concerned. Would love to sit down over a few frothy's and pick some bloke's brains about fishing..... We'd be drunk for weeks i reckon. KEEP THE INFO COMING GUY'S AND GIRLS.... BLOODY HANDY SITE!!!!
