Your favourite Glass Boat from yesteryear....

FW Crew,
Just after your opinions on some of the better glass hulls from the past 20 or so years I Guess...
Not recent, I'm more after a project.
I'll be interested to hear your thoughts, something around the 18ft mark preferably.
Cheers
Tim

bit bigger than what you are
bit bigger than what you are after but I used to drive a Haines Formula 23 with 2 x 200 hp outboards and 450 l fuel tanks. no matter how much air you got you always ca me down arse first. fastest trip to rotto (north mole to phillip rock) was 11 and 1/2 minutes at about 42 knots. top speed on the river wad 50 knots. very comfortable ride but unstable when stationary

Had to laugh
My father had a Sunseeker 23 (I think that was the name but truely cant remember) with a Volvo Penta 235 Sterndrive. It was fully rigged as a pure dive boat with everything you need. Dont remember the speed but from unrestricted at the heads to Thompson was 11 minutes flat. Day was glass and it was one hell off a ride. This was truely a beast he built and she was a tough old bird with extra reinforcement in the hull. Needles to say he was a diving fanatic at the time.
PS: checked in it was a Sunseeker

Haines 19r. What a weapon.
For or a bit smaller and more of an all rounder the Penguin Huntress are a good boat. Plenty around and well priced. Baron Sportsman another classic hull.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Yep agree with the Voyager LTD.
I still miss it,and the day I parked it in the front of the driveway with a For Sale sign on it -sold that afternoon.
But those were the days when the high interest rates were killing us with our mortgage, and bringing up the kids.
Ahhhhh.

Yep Voyager Mk11 LTD
Only 18'6 but great blue water boat. These things were that good Ryan Thipthorp operated two at different times of his early fishing days.

My old Pacemaker Calais was the softest driest ride I've ever had in a boat Tim. If I could go back in time I'd buy it back!

I Have a 77 voyager ltd, has had full rebuild. rebuilt floors, foam filled, transform modifications, anchor well, 2 PAC paint job, duel fuel tanks, under gunnel rod storage plus more.
Rides really well for its size, gets used for family cruising, offshore, fads, and all up and down the coast.
Love my older boats

Bertram/Carribean 20
Had an Aussie made Bertram 20 Runabout with a 150 Yammy on the back that used to make plate boats look stupid when the going got rough.

Bonus boats
yeah throw in a swiftcraft dominator for me , solid as ,
and also a very, very early boat from the 70,s was just called a M.F.G, around 18 foot, built over east I believe , mate had one ,
ran it with 70hp ( game) , then a 115, and right up to 150hp when he tryed ski-ing, had it on a dual axle trailer, and the trailer still looked overloaded!
that boat was heavy man , it bloody well parted the waters , when you followed it from behind, never seen another.
this decal is from a parent company in the U.S

Hustler
My first boat was a 19 foot Hustler with a 115 Evinrude on the back, Royal paper sounder, compass and a UHF cb radio. Navigation was by landmarks or compass bearing plus time.
They were much the same shape as the Pacemaker and came in a 21 foot extended version.

Bunbury spots
All the in close spots I know off Bunbury are all from landmarks. The deeper ones were from after GPSs came out and while I was pro fishing down that way.
Used to go out with the Greeks shark fishing on weekends from high school, old alarm clock and compass bearing, steam for hours[max speed from a 2 cylinder Lister was 7-8 knots with sail up] and at first light look for flag at each end of the net. Pull nets by hand, re set them then put beach net on the back of the boat. Steam in to the beach and slowly make our way home all the time looking for schools of fish to run the net around. Spot a shot, and first off the boat with enough coils of rope to get you to shore then pull the end of the net in while they ran the boat in a half circle round the school and dumped someone in the water at the other end of the net. Pull net ashore and tie pocket then drag it out to the now anchored boat to haul aboard. Was bloody hard work but enjoyed every minute.

Penguin
Don't forget the old Penguin Huntriss, built like a tank and would handle almost anything, very similar to the Pacemaker back in the day but the Huntriss had those small reverse chines.

+ 1 on the SC dominators good boats.
Original sharkcat would be my top pick for rough water.
Currently have a Seaskipper which is not bad, I know its solid and will get me home if it blows up

When I was a kid dreamt of
When I was a kid dreamt of owning a Caribbean Reefrunner, happy to have one in the carport now, prior to that was the Fraser Voyager 5.2. Have a soft spot for the Pacemakers as the original Lancelin dhu slayer, never owned one but love the Swiftcraft Dominator, learnt a bit from an old fisherman at Kalbarri, "Greendoor" followed him around in my Stacer 444 thinking I was in a much bigger boat. Good days. Almost forgot the Barron Outsider. Don't think you can go wrong with any of these with a Japanese 4 stroke pushing it along.

probably the best old boat
ride I ever had was the Chivers Safari - was a big lump of a boat though to tow.....not that that was my problem. Great boat. Had a Pacemaker runabout for a while - another great ride/boat.

bigmick - I just missed out picking up a well kept Bonito 185 Sportstourer from Estuary Marine last year. I was there one weekend and then went back a few weeks later to put down a deposit to find that the whole place had close down!

Caribbean reef runner for
Caribbean reef runner for sure a wicked hull. There's a reason they haven't changed for over twenty years. A good flare at the bow gives you a soft ride and the handling lets you whip it into a sharp turn but still it's stable at rest. Very good all round boat although a bit bigger than 18 foot.

Any of the Penguin glass
Any of the Penguin glass boats. Old Julius knew how to build them as he used to race them. From the Phantom to the Huntress to the Ultimate, all top notch offshore boats. I had a Huntress and a Phantom and I reckon the Phantom was the best through the water. I lusted after an Ultimate but couldnt afford a vehicle big enough to pull one !
