Yanchep Lagoon
Submitted by Ganged on Tue, 2009-06-02 12:34
Hi guys/girls
Went to Yanchep Lagoon yesterday and fished in the lagoon looking at the reef. There was a strong current going from left to right, is this current always there and does it matter where you stand.
Fishing was slow got 1 KG, 2 Taylor a rock cod and a few Whiting between 2 of us. Had a few big bites but i think my technique leaves something to be desired. Got there about 6:45am and left at 2pm. Weather was a beaut would love a few more days like that.

Current
The current is worse when there is a high tide or there is a biggish swell running. It is the run off of what ever comes over the top of the reef back past the shop.
The trick is to walk further north towards Club Capricorn ,the current turns out to sea.If you set up on the northern side of the run out you miss most of the weed as well
Hope it is some help

Tailor
Tailor were 30 and 35 cm.
Thanks for the info about the current i just thought being closer to the reef would be better. Will have to try fishing off the reef at low tide could be fun. Has anyone here done that?

Just South
There's a gravel/unsealed carpark on the opposite side of the road from the water. If you reach the right turn to Brazier Ave you've gone too far. Flight of stairs going down to the beach. Wade across the lagoon, stand on the reef. Only do this when there's little or no swell.
Got some 40cm plus tailor there early mornings (just on light) when I was living up there, baitcasting mulies, and the herring can be very thick. Should be good for salmon there as well, but the only one I ever got in the area was actually in the main lagoon (where you were) itself...again, baitcasting a mulie.

No...
...and it wasn't for lack of trying, either! Might've just got the wrong day(s) however, because when salmon/tailor are hungry, lures are just as good as bait, if not better!

Auslobster is right on the money there That is a good
spot. But be aware of the waves, the holes in the reef around you and wear reef boots and carry a reef bag. It will make life much easier for you. If the fish are slow and the wind isn't too bad, try throwing out unweighted mulies, that seems to work best there.
