Will this ever happen again????????
With all the talk about tailor on poppers etc around the forums at the moment i thought id share alittle miracle that happened to me late last night.
With the scorching weather i thought i might head down to hillaries for some relaxing light popper action to see what was around. Fishing with the bream gear and small poppers i started casting around hopeing to nail something of interest. After down sizing all the gear mainly including the leader (down to 8lb) just to see what would be interested in a well presented offering.
I looked at my rig and said to my self "shit i hope something big doesnt hit it" because i was using a 1 to 3kg outfit running 2lb braid and 8lb leader. I cast out and WHAM! the little popper got KO'd on the second bloop! The fish went pretty hard for a couple of minutes until at the rock edge where the leader pinged on a rock as the fish jumped......a nice tailor around the 30cm mark.
Nevermind i thought that was great fun and i retied and re cast. I hooked 3 more and they all released great, around the 30 to 35cm range. This is were the unbelievable happened! I thought id give it one last cast when the lure got crunched again! A short fight that ended up being a slightly dead wieght when winding in.
To my amazement it was the tailor i had caught about 15mins prior with a nice little 35 bubble pop green popper hanging out of its mouth conected to about 60cm of leader! I couldnt beleive my eyes and only wished i had a camera to capture this moment! This fish just wanted to give my lure back!
The fish was only small but obviously unharmed and worried to have another go at a different popper with one still inbedded in its jaw! Thanks for my lure back mate and he was released safley to swim off again. Goes to show some fish arnt put off by capture hey? One thing ill never forget.....bluddy amazing!

Yeah rickets, i wouldnt say
Yeah rickets, i wouldnt say night but pretty close to it! They started to go off the bite when it got dark. There was quite a far bit of bait hanging around as well which i only noticed them beacuse whne your lure hit the water a few would jump as there got a fright. I reacon if you had been bait casting blue bait you would have got one every cast.
Keep it tight, reeeeeeel tight!

Nice one
I have heard of fish being caught with previously lost hooks still in their mouth, but not a popper. Sounds like a fun session. I managed to find some blue bait a few weeks ago and had a crack at Hillaries north wall, but there was absolutely nothing ther that day apart from a few squid. Seems I went off a few weeks early.
Which wall were you on.

I was just wondering up and down the north wall with a rod and a few odd lures in the pocket. Nothing to strenuous, just some fun. Nice to have a relaxing session on the water....fish are just a bonus. I have heard of some great reports on XOL skippy there at night as well, when fishing the bottom with blue bait :)
Keep it tight, reeeeeeel tight!

Drummer with float
I remember hearing years ago of a guy being busted up by a big black drummer off the rocks at North Curl Curl in Sydney and then hooking and landing the same fish some time later with the line and his float still attached, though that fish had been foul hooked the first time.
There was also a story of someone in a dinghy being hit by something big and losing everything, rod and all over ths side, and then catching a big mulloway with a hook in its mouth and after hand lining the attached line finding his rod attached. I think the latter may be an old wife's tale, but I know the first is true.
Its always a great story and best of all you get your gear back.
It did sound like a fun session, Regards Colin Hay

Thats one thing i have
Thats one thing i have wonderd ...... After releasing fish or after you loose a fish like a big bream, how long before it starts feeding again?
Tailor may be more vicious than bream though. I picture bream hiding away for days after getting released lol

Yeah Dean i was using 35
Yeah Dean i was using 35 bubble pops, halco 80 roostas and a few other small poppers ive had for a while.
Hey Colin, i cast to a snag up at willie creek broome hopeing for a barra and hooked something which felt like a tree branch only to find it was a abu 5600c4 baitcaster on a morium rod! Still in smick condition so i guess it hadnt been in there long. I told a few boys at the pub about it and by the end of the night i had a guy walkup and say hed lost one there the day before. He even told me what line was on it and the colour of the combo so i gave it back too him and he took me out fishing the next day and i got my pb barra! Worked out alright IMO. :)
Keep it tight, reeeeeeel tight!

Rofl, Good stuff SPESS. I
Rofl, Good stuff SPESS.
I have another tale of willies creek.
I was fishing with a mate Brads rod (as I didnt have a surf rod ) chasing threadies at up north Cable beach near the stomalites (sp) Coconut Wells. ( great thready spot)
I had caught a few salmon and cast out and forgot to loosen the drag as I went to chat to a couple of loverly backpackers we had taken along with us.
Heard a noise and looked around in time to see this little wake heading for the setting sun. Yup something had grabbed the bait and done a runner.
Needles to say, may mate was pissed.
The rod was custom made and a 21st Pressie from a few mates ( one deceased )
I did the bast I could to replace it but he really wasnt happy, grabbed the rod I bought to replace it, tested the flex and snapped it.
Grumbled and took the reel and through a snapped rod at me.
Was about 2 mmonths later and a work mate of Brads was fishing in Willies, he came to work the next day and was telling how he found this rod and reel floating in the creek. Sure enought it was his custom made rod. Reel was totally corroded and fell to bits.
Brad was happpy as he had his rod and a new reel.
I had a broken rod.
I was coming down to Perth and took it back to where it was purchased and was replaced no questions. That rod has been my main surf rod for the last 12 yrs.
Until today.
I have just purchased a new 13 ft Lemax Surf I picked up from Oceanside :) So heres to another 10 + yrs of happy fishing..
