If i had the money $$$ i would do my best to get the

Shimano Torium 50 --- with 600m of 50lb braid and the rest 0.60mm mainline.

with a nice 12ft low mount 8-9oz weight.

Also To what size are you chasing?

Casting or Kayaking, ballooning, livebaiting, sliding?

that will matter a lot on what reel you get.

henri, toriums can also cast

Fri, 2010-06-18 22:37

henri, toriums can also cast quite well. i suck at casting overheads and baitcasters, but i can cast the torium without getting birdsnests etc.. hold a lot of line too. dont buy online, buy from local shops, like The Tackle Shack or Oceanside.

Torium 30 or 40 would be the go actually 50 is just to big if you dont have the power to cast it.

why on earth do you blokes wanna target rays?

they are boring as hell. i'd rather catch herring tbh.

spinfisher is the toughest spinning reel that wont cost you over $200 but people just catch rays for the fun of it i would much rather target big mulla like diehards and snapper

Catching rays is

Sat, 2010-06-19 08:36

Catching rays is different.

no head shakes etc.

i dont know why i ONLY target them on my big rod its lets say for a bit of fun,

as i know i wont be going mullawaying in the swan or at moore or going deep sea for dhuies snapper and sambos so i just say lets get some rays for a bit of fun as its only down the road from where i live.

and IMO  O/H is far better than Alvey. And the Penn 950SSm is $210 and u can nealry get twice as much line on that fomr a Torium 40-50 and it costs about $50 more.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

why?

well JMO having a huge dead weight on the end of your line for casting is going to hurt on the release of a spin reel or alvey, and if using braid may lacerate a bit from the force of the cast?

But O/H just need a tight thumb on the spool and just after it reaches the top you release your thumb. then thumb the spool every so often to avoid backlash or birdsnest.

after using alveys Feral,

Sat, 2010-06-19 09:13

after using alveys Feral, they really wear you out fast on the bigger rays. i love my spinfisher and virtually the only workout it gets is from rays and the rare fish. as eric said, its just down the road and its 100 times better than being stuck at home in front of the idiot box. personally i will continue to fish for them no matter what anyone says. ok daniel, how can you say a herring is more fun than a stingray? id much prefer targetting stingrays! there is always the chance of picking up a shark or snapper etc, so its all worth a shot!

stingrays don't do anything.

Sat, 2010-06-19 17:40

stingrays don't do anything. they may slowly swim off and perhaps sit in the sand for half an hr if you are lucky. the occasional eagle ray may go for a run, but apart from that, yeah not very exiting. i don't love herring or anything, but hey i'd rather target them then rays. at least they do something. they'll smash a lure almost the same size as them and at least jump a little.

hey, nothing wrong with catching rays if it gives you enjoyment, sure is better then being at home in front of the tv like you said, just for me personally I wouldn't buy gear specifically to target them and go out trying to catch them.

Your not doing it right if

Sun, 2010-06-20 14:38

Your not doing it right if you get an eagle ray and it does nothing, I've had them launching out of the water on numerous occasions and is a great sight to see. Yes there are better things to catch out there but if theres nothing around a ray turns a boring session into an excellent session. As for the question I use my penn 6/0 senator on them and its never missed a beat and before you say you can't cast them I can cast mine with a 6 ounce sinker and a whole scalie a good 50 metres. Most of the time they aren't that far out anyway.

reel

Sat, 2010-06-19 11:29

mate look at the tld 20/40 or the speed master , both these reels are bullet proof and have stood the test of time ........ if pulled well over 10 tons of sharks and ray's on mine and they still going strong . Dont get caught in the hype the fish in the metro are only little , u dont need a km of line on your reel to stop them ..... 450-600m is plenty from shore. Once u start fishing for rays and sharks as sport fishing and you travelling the coast looking for the big one , thats when u may want to upgrade to the toriums / saltiga's . Be careful when looking at the torium 50 as these are  not easy to cast  - and would be a total waste of $'s if your small in stature and haven got the right rod to go with it .  O/heads need to be loaded and balanced on the right rod to get to get the full rewards out of using them.

just a question Skrewloose

Sat, 2010-06-19 23:31

just a question Skrewloose .. how many problems have you had with the finnor offshores ?? when i was in exmouth last month the crew i was with broke 2 old penn SS's and replaced them with offshore 850's .. . they broke both of them in 3 days of only light fishing. 1 handle fell off first and then the drag knob griped the spool and busted the braid the next day ,, the second reels handle actually snapped right off. both reels where fixed but you would never find me buying one.

stingray are strong so you need a strong reel

Sun, 2010-06-20 18:06

i wouldnt spend much at all on a reel especially for jettys and stuff because they get banged around you know

i had a penn  220 although i dont reccomend it becasue i reckon its cheap shit it has caught rays around 15 or 20 kios no problem

maybe a shimano speedmaster if u want a reel that can cast,

otherwise id get a shimano tld
