what reel do you jig with

 Hey guys,

I am looking for a reel to jig out deep 250m +  It seems to be a toss up between the shimano 20000sw or the dawia extreme 6500

what do you guys jig with ?

Both reels will do the job easily enough and both will hold ample amount of line to fish 250+ (obviously dependant on your choice of braid)

Colours could be your only choice in which reel you choose.

S-Extremes are a V nice reel with improved drag washers to the D/F or expo making them alot smoother, still the same amount of drag though...

Theres no better reel IMO

I'll get you to break yet Sam.

Its ~ $200 more expensive for an inferior reel. You'd have to be a Daiwa diehard to go it over the Stella.

I agree with Huggy - stella

Wed, 2010-01-06 20:44

I agree with Huggy - stella for capacity. If you want to run more line for deeper water - there's always a max spool as well.

If your going to go deep

Wed, 2010-01-06 21:13

If your going to go deep look at a higher speed overhead.  If its a lever drag even better.

Both the above mentioned reels are great.  Someone needs to do a youtube with the line tied to the back of a high end road bike then winch a 50 kilo lump of concrete.

There will be some surprises, not to mention some burnt reels Cool

To some peoples joy some reels may appear cheaper to the OZ public in shops as the OZ dollar went up amazingly enough to the people who jumped the gun the prices are lower now and in the near future over a range of products.

I saw one rod dropped a hundred bucks in price today alone.

i have 2 20000 stellas and a did have 2 exp6500s until last month when i sold one.I use the stellas when i am feeling weak and worn out as they have a smooth borderline wimpy drag. When i get angry and want to pull some faces off fish i pull out the tractor reel crank down the drag and get mad.If i had to choose one of them to take away it would be the salty LESS parts means LESS problems.Look at the break down of the two reels the stella has a scary amount of parts. If i had too break a reel down and fix a part i would have a go at a salty but if it was a stella i would throw it in a bag and get a whole new reel.Laughing

the old 20000fa i got off you has caught a couple of dozen marlin since i sent it up to him. That being said when i go up in march he wants me to bring it back down for a bearing and drag replacement then he will do it all again. If you were going to switchbait for marlin it would be Stella all day long.

it has done a hand full of fish

Wed, 2010-01-06 21:37

over a hundred and dropped one they got to the boat twice that he estimated at between two hundred and two twenty.Knowing how he estimates fish i would say it would be nudging two fity that was the big girl that did the damage to the drag. They had to drive off it a few times to get its head up and that is when the stellas drag smoothness comes into its own.The salty drag is just to rough for that type of fishing. If the whole object is for the fish not to take drag then go the salty.Laughing

hmm.....few interesting

Wed, 2010-01-06 21:40

hmm.....few interesting comments there.

Nowadays the new Stellas are just as Good as the S-Extremes but yeh Shimano has the better line capacity. Shimano also now offers a super deep 20k Max spool which will 600m of PE6 braid or a shitloads of Berkley Whiplash.

To be honest for winching with high drag pressure, the Stella can it just as well as the Saltigas. Both will have very similar "cranking power" and the Stellas drag system have been better without any enchancement.

Ive had 2 EXP's and the old 20k FA and now SW20k. They all can do the same job. The EXP's had they drag washers replaced after 1 season use and the Carbontex re-greased often. I also replaced the line roller bearings once every year as they dont have the old ring seals like they do in the Z6000.

Sorry to be a party popper but Daiwa is just re-inventing its range. Shimano has an all new Stella....

FYI...my SW 20k with the new MAX spool holds 630m of PE6 (85lb).

Kinda have to disagree about

Wed, 2010-01-06 21:49

Kinda have to disagree about jigging "deep" with high speed overheads. A "deep" jigging reel will have a large diameter spool for line capacity, most "low" gear ratio reels nowadays can wind in nearly 1m of line per turn of the handle. A "high" gear ratio can wind in another?? 20-30cm more line but looses its "cranking power" considerably due to the larger main gear.

Why do you think the larger Shimano Torium and Trinidad 50's and the Ocea Jigger 4000P are low gear ratio's? Same for the old Ryobi Marfix. They all have large enough spool diameters to wind in nearly 1m of line without have to increase gear ratio.

my say

Wed, 2010-01-06 22:11

I have used the ryobi 5000 and the saltiga expedition 6500 and caught 30kg sambos on both, the ryobi i like because its so pretty love the silver but the expedition from what i have felt (lol) is the best. it kills me but the drag pressure on it is better and u can skull drag them up (if your stronger than the fish on the end of the line)

dont forget im a chick n my drag is pretty week if you ask the mister lol.

You shouldnt be winch cranking with your reel.  You lift with your rod and wind down. Lift, wind down Tongue out

Nah, Id still go an overhead for deep water.  You can feel the hits on the spool with your thumb on the way down.  No line going through 90 degree turns on a big deep fish.  Its personal choice though.   Im sticking with the overhead choice for the 250+ metre deep water big fish. Cool

Theyll all do the job.

Different strokes for different blokes.

Now being serious,,,,,what is the difference in line capacity between a stella 20000 and a saltiga 6500? well say 80Lb braid?

line capacity

Thu, 2010-01-07 06:23

depending on line you use obviously, but for comparisons sake in 80lb braid its 300m on the expidition and 400m on the stella. For ~$300 more you can buy the max spool and up that past 500m.

If it was just bobbing around in 100m or so then its a case of whatever you like, but for deeper work (as specified) in 250m + then the line capacity starts becoming more of an issue and the stella shines brighter in that arena.

If you really wanna get serious though, then you should be looking at something like a Penn 16VSX which hold some serious amount of braid, has a 2 speed gearbox and a drag curve calibrated for use with braid. Jigging will be a little cumbersome though I would have thought....

Sold my old Stella 20000FA

Sold my old Stella 20000FA and got my money back 2 years ago.

Now I'm back into jigging and using my humble Spheros 14000FA.

I've been using the 14000fa for 6 years with the upgraded washers and its never missed a beat, caught over a hundred sambos, heaps of upnorth cellar dwellers and is relatively cheap and affordable.  I don't need no bling.

I only go jigging on

Thu, 2010-01-07 10:58

I only go jigging on charters, so never go deeper than 150m.  That's why I sold my Stella 20000FA as it wasn't going to be used enough for it's price.  I used that money to buy a stella 2500 and 4000.

Campbells had the best Stella sales back in the day.  I got the 20000 for around $800, the 2500 for around $580 and the 4000 for around $670.

If was lucky enough to have a mate with a boat who goes out deeper, then I would invest in a Stella 20000 again for sure.

Yeh, not really for the question posed.  I'd go the stella for deep water, but for incloser than 200m the cheaper alternatives are still a good option and hold up well.

Agreed!

I had a beefed up spheros 14000 and that was a great reel for sambo jigging in 100 - 150m (despite fighting above its weight class), but I think once you push out past 250m and deeper than its going way way beyond its capabilities and line capacity starts to becomes an issue......
