What happened to being treated fairly!

 Ok,

Was going back to the Mary street lagoon on Sunday morning, had my 2kids with me. Have not been out with them for ages and have moved twice in a couple of months due to renting and our house being built. Which is taking ages, dickheads everywhere clearly breaking the rules. And got pulled over by the dept of transport in there shiny boat!

Good morning sir, we have run a check on your boat and it is not registered. Was unaware it had expired and tried to explain it probably got lost in mail redirection, they could not have cared less?

Mon, 2013-02-11 07:36

Had similar situation recently where my rego went astray.

Let Ol Yella's bad luck be a warning to everyone - check your boat rego.

160 bucks is bad enough but if your boat goes missing or under a reef somewhere your insurance probably won't be paying out.

have a go

you could maybe try and show that the letter hasnt been received and explain the circumstances. I know most people say dont bother but the 10 minutes to write it and post may just find someone in a magnanimous mood.

It does happen, and even if it doesnt it may draw to the attention of someone higher up the chain of lazy policing?

Give it a go, and make sure you stick to facts and not finger pointing.

If nothing else youve wasted 3 nanoseconds of their time and given them something to hang on the smoko room wall and laugh at!

Thanks for the suggestion, going to call and see if it has been paid first. Moving twice in 12 months anything is possible, but failing that a letter will be written.

Mon, 2013-02-11 07:59

I didnt really think about that Tank, and you are right about the sticker-very hard defence.

But that subject as regards cars and no stickers is one that pisses me off. They stop giving stickers, save about 3 cents on rego which isnt passed on anyhow.

Some people like not having stickers on windscreen-just make it voluntary to put on sticker.

I know last time we headed up north I woke up at 2 am with dread-"I cant remember when I registered the Cruiser last?".

Quick online check ok but with disclaimer not to rely on this information

You are full of shit, mail redirection shit always gets lost. I also thought that stickers were no longer used, same as cars.

paid the regoon the trailer and received no sticker, had to go onto the website to find out. How about instead of being a tossed put yourself in someone else shoes, and try and see there point of view.

Also if iris a lesson, first time offence normally a warning would be a good lesson. Not a exercise to bump up KPI's and revenue.

Im not certain but as regards DOT, they may say that you have to notify them of a new address within a certain period rather than just redirect.

It would pay to ask them (without explaining why) which addresses they have on file for boat and car (seperately)

While I'm not a fan of them

Mon, 2013-02-11 08:51

While I'm not a fan of them not giving you a warning first & just being revenue raising plicks, the sticker is on the side of the boat so you should have known your rego was coming due & made enquires about it, in person if need be. No good blaming them for you not keeping on top of things.

Like you I think it's a bit harsh not to give you a warning for a first offence & I think thier time & resources would be better spent chasing down the yobs that are speeding, getting too close to other boats etc but at the end of the day it is your responsibility to make sure your rego is paid, not thiers, so you have to accept at least part of the blame. Write the letter to them & see how you go.

Warning

Mon, 2013-02-11 08:26

Aren't the warnings documented? So if you don't follow up and you are caught again you are fined...

Could understand if you are a repeat offender and have multiple offenses, but never before have I done this...

Mon, 2013-02-11 13:34

Yep same thing happened to me Ol Yella

Better outcome for me though. Took the kids squidding out from the Garden Island Causeway ramp, had the boat back on the trailer and they came around checked the boat over and the catch. Then checked the rego and somehow I'd lost, misplaced or thought that I had paid it and hadn't. Explained my case, he made a note of it, told me to pay it within the week or he would check and if I hadn't paid up he would send out the fine. Was very civil about the whole thing. Thats how they should of treated your case IMO.

Cheers

Chris

Mon, 2013-02-11 08:28

I copped that same fine for simply not having the new sticker up once! Old rego rego sticker was December, fined in January...That is what I thought was stiff! Needless to say the new sticker went straight on once I got home. Somedays they are just pricks, other days they are no worries.

you can go online and update info....redirection does work but sometimes the redirected mail is very slow getting to end user...as far as seeing another point o few I think we all can see it...and we have just shared our point of veiw...not personal attack,  just opinions shared...intersting third sentence on your original post...

Agree stickers on windows is a great help and front of trailers...when the front yard is a car yard it is a bit hard to keep up...o well, reminder messages on calender both hard copy and on line.

Mon, 2013-02-11 11:07

For the last 2 years I've paid my rego online and received no sticker, initially thinking it may have gone the same way as the cars.
Went all last year with no sticker, and double-checked this year after seeing other boats with 2014 stickers.

I had to ring them up and request it.

Nice lady & very helpful, but fully admitted it's not automated and heaps of stickers aren't sent out for online renewals.

For the last 4 years or so I've gone down to the local office and paid the rego and received a new sticker only to get another one through the mail with the rego papers.

No excuse for not renewing the rego when the sticker is there for all to see and take notice of.

Mon, 2013-02-11 11:15

similar thing happened with my car rego - changed address 3 times in one year. I called to change my address and they only changed the address for my drivers license not my car - eneded up driving my car unregistered for 5 motnhs until i got a fine in the mail from fines collection dept for failure to hand in number plates! - Anyway i called DOT and they admitted they made the mistake of not changing addresss for my vehicle - covered my fine and didnt have to get a vehicle check. V lucky nothing happened to my car for the 5 months tho!

rego

Mon, 2013-02-11 12:16

Should have given a warning IMHO... $160...... revenue raising at it's worst and spoils the day.

Here's another.... Purchased the tinnie, (probably 11 yrs ago now) and guy who sold it to me didn't have the thing HIN'ed.

So I sent the transfer papers etc off and got hin'ing underway... needed to show letter of sale I had typed up and had him sign etc etc.

Sent money for rego etc etc to Hillarys Dept office. Much stuffing around got tired of waiting for weeks and went boating......

Anyway took the kids for a bream fish in the river near Maylands and got pulled up, 2 Officers in 20 ft boat...

One of them makes the initial comment "you're not registered" immediately grabs the book.....

So with the kids in the boat trying to do the right thing, and show them all's well, try to explain to these guys situation,

One of them was a "shit head" no other word for it, just being nasty and aggressive, in the end told him to shutup and listen....

Told them to call Hillarys if they didn't believe me and I was not going to keep the boat off the water any longer due to their administrative ineptitude,

So the "good cop" calls Hillarys and amazingly there was someone in the office cannot remember the day..... may have been a Saturday Morning???? who knows,

Gave them the ladys name who I had been dealing with and; "allo allo allo wot ave we ere..... the gentlemens papers, money order, and all associated info is logged on the computer."

"aye Captn Mannering - Ezz tellin the truf E is"

No apology from Mr shithead, "just make sure you get it finalised"..... type of comment.... and as we parted I bid him farewell with a nice

" KMA mate I've been trying to do that for weeks now!!!, get your shit sorted and stop harrassing people out trying to do the right thing. "

had to ring DOT about my cat  and the haynes rego, as they are due at almost the same time, the fellow I spoke to did a search and found although I had paid both, the info hadnt been passed on to the department. 7 days later I had both stickers, in separate envelopes. You have to check, as it's "all care, no responsibility on their part.

Safety Issue

Mon, 2013-02-11 13:01

What you fail to see is that having your rego upto date is a safety issue. No difference to have the correct safety gear onboard.

If we have a vessel that has logged on with us and is over due we pass on the rego details to the water police to followup. This is one reason we ask for it if you have club callsign or use boat name.

Water Police can access contact numbers, home address and trailer rego. With the trailer rego we can go the marina you lauched from to see if you are still out there.

If rego lapsed may not be on there computer.

Would you expect a warning if you did not have the right safety gear onboard?

I used to put the due date on my electronic diary a month before to ensure it came through.

Ponder this one

Mon, 2013-02-11 13:18

A bloke has an unregistered boat. Gets stopped and tells the officer 'ive never had any trouble before, this is the first time. It must've got lost in the mail"

The officer, being kind gives the bloke a break and gives him a warning. The boatie leaves, grinning, for this is not the 1st time he has been caught, but the 100th. He just uses the same excuse and somehow keeps getting away with warnings.

I'm not saying this is the case in your instance Ol Yella, but you need to consider that the majority of people these guys stop say the same thing.

There is no system in place to record 'Warnings'. So the guy that stops you wont know how many near brushes you have had.

I've done it myself with the car rego. Thing is, i shouldve paid it. My car, my responsibililty.

I believe that written

Mon, 2013-02-11 14:12

I believe that written warnings are recorded not just verbal, and in that case they could escort you to the ramp to remove vessel from the water til paid.

They would also see if youd already been warned.

Poor Ol Yella, hes getting hammered here. At the end of the day I beleive you shouldnt be fined for an honest inadvertant one off mistake.

Cops, pollies etc make mistakes in real life, and if your not a repeat offender and there has been no consequence why should a heavy fine be the immediate response?

Rego

Mon, 2013-02-11 14:04

Sorry Ol Yella, but as I found out more than once in my life, ignorance is no defence.  Just recently I launched at Leeuwin, paid my $12.00 parking fee, put my ticket on the dash and launched the boat.  When I got back I found I had a $50 fine because I put up my sun protector and the ranger could see the ticket but couldn't read it.  Luckily I was able to prove I'd paid and they generously gave me a 50% discount.

I've worked in parking (don't shoot me!) and you've no idea how many people suddenly "find" their ticket (borrow off someone else) to try and get off a fine...  A parking inspector can't be expected to assume there is a valid ticket under a sun reflector.  If they did a reflector would be a handy investment to avoid the need to buy parking tickets.  You were lucky to get let off anything:)

Mon, 2013-02-11 16:42

Ol' Yella, i have symphathy for you as i have been given a break myself when i could have been fined. Up north where i live we had no permanent Fisheries in town so when they did rock up early on they certainly did issue warnings, but as time went by their attitude changed and their quote then was ' we didn't come all this way and not hand out infringement notices '

I guess those of you in Metro that fished in the early days may have had some warnings but i am afraid those days are over.

Leeuwin Parking Fine

Tue, 2013-02-12 06:52

They say it's"not what you know, it's who you know".  Well in my case that didn't work.  I had my son with me and he is a current Ranger whith Geraldton-Greenough shire. He's a good one tho.

When I went up to reverse the trailer onto the ramp, the Ranger met me and told me he had issued an infringement notice.  When I showed him my $12 parking ticket he took all details in his notebook.  When I asked if he was going to cancel the infringement notice he said he couldn't and I should write to the East Freo Council and explain what happened.  I did this, very politely and I received a page and a half of "what a bad boy are you" and the decision to cut the fine in half.  And me being a lifelong Sharks supporter.

It is very common to see people get caught out and the first thing they do is to try and blame someone else.

Just pay the fine.
