Wet weather gear
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2008-04-17 08:43
With long range predictions suggesting it is going to rain everyday for the next two weeks at least - except next Wednesday. It is time to get the wet weather gear out.
Does anyone have a particular type of wet weather apparel they prefer.
For fishing from the rocks and beaches I definately prefer a jacket that is not too bulky so I still have freedom to cast.
I am thinking of buying a steamer or something similar for winter beach fishing sessions. Has anyone had experience using wetsuits in this manner?
Many thanks, Colin Hay

Did you catch anything?
Some of my best fishing sessions have been in the rain, especially for Bream.

Hi Peter
Do you have a preference for any brand in the wet suite pants? Long time since I put on a wetsuit. It will be a cary site to see me in one now.

I didn't see a big shore dumper coming in the dark on Tuesday night and got soaked up to me neck.

Would any of you bother
Would any of you bother using chest waders off the beach? I wouldn't use it off the rocks in case you got washed in as they woudl act liek a sea anchor, but i reckon off the beack you could be safe. You could wear something warm underneath.
I haven't seen wetsuit legs only.?

I would be reluctant
As Blowy and I have both experienced, it is quite easy to get hit by a surprise wave in the dark - or to step into a hole - and the waders would fill up pretty quick.

Wetsuit
You could buy a standard two peice wetsuit - long johns and jacket. Just wear the long johns with jumper/raincoat up top. If you get washed in, you then at least have some flotation on too. Some dive booties to complete the package.
Neoprene does not breathe though, so if you are running around they can get quite hot and then irritating. I've only ever worn my 5mm long johns (thats what I've got). A 3mm suit would be perfect as move flexiblity in the suit.
If you really wanted to get fancy, you could get a custom made suit. Fishwrecked logo, pockets for knife/pliers/bait and even a chest mounted stubby holder
Cheers Pete

While you are at it, get a gimbal bucket built in. Hell throw in a hood (mask) and cape (to keep you extra dry) while you are at it.
(After the fishing, returns to the car 'Yeah, really officer, this is what I wear when I go fishing'.)
Side benefit is, you might get a spot in Heroes.
I can see it now, the Avenging Angler strikes again!

Hahaha get the gimbal built
Hahaha get the gimbal built in, imagine getting pulled over wearing that... Officer would get all excited!!
I would stick to 3mm as like Pete says it would get hot and steamy in there. Custom making wetsuits is not much more expensive and if you were only getting pants done i'd think it would be cheap. I would prefer pants instead of long johns (imagine trying to take a piss unless you went the central heating option)

I am not sure I would go the full suit
It would get to hot.
Besides I would probably get harpooned by a Japanese whaler or clubbed by a seal hunter.

Mate
If they saw me in a full wet suit they would come all the way to Perth. Plenty of quality blubber.

You're right Colin
I probably don't even need a wetsuit.
