if you are only going
if you are only going shallow the olympus u/water camera does well , only waterproof to 10 mtrs, also when using u/water try and have the sun behind you so there is no glare as well as having the flash turned on unless the water is sooty..... ps.. the olympus can be picked up for under $600 and they can do video with sound u/water as well

Depends on what kind of
Depends on what kind of camera you have obviously. SLR underwater housings can cost as much as the camera.

you will probably need to look at
You will probably need to look at a reasonable quality housing something along the lines of Ikelite, Sea&Sea, Nimar, Aquatech.
Prices vary considerably across brands and also dependant on what model camera is being housed and lens option..
For example a 350D or 450D would be a damn sight cheaper than a housing for a 1D.
Therefore you will need to consider what DSLR and lens options you will intend to use.
Then you will have to get the appropriate lens ports and consider strobe housings or dedicated u/w srobes.
Alternatively...
Maybe have a look on ebay (both .com and .com.au) and do a search on underwater camera housings and also on the brands listed above..
You can sometimes get some bloody good buys... I was almost tempted a few months ago to get an Ikelite housing, lens port and camera.
Just figured it would be more practical to get a housing to suit my current DSLR's rather than downgrading.

If you want to go deep, you
If you want to go deep, you will need an external flash.
Get a camera where you can access manual setings.
Find a housing where you can later add a wide angle lens.

I have a Cannon A710
I Brought a normal digital camera & underwater housing, the Cannon A710 has image stabaliser as well. Took some Great pics & video with sound on the Coolidge in Vanuatu down to 60m, even though housing only rated to 40m, just had to make sure it was on before going past about 35m otherwise pressure on the buttons would stuff you around. I also find that if you dive with a wreck light it is a lot better for your pictures than a flash as much less back scatter.
