Guys fishing out of Rockingham

Fri, 2009-07-10 20:53

PM me your #s & when I go out next, you're welcome along for the ride.   Cleaning is no big deal as ally is basicallly quick wipe down & rinse.  My boat has ballast which makes for a softer ride when drifting. Can't promise Dhuies as I'm still learning.  Would definately jump on with BlankCheque in Mandurah if you get a chance & do whatever he aks.  I have watched him bring back some big snapper when everyone is getting zilch.  Cheers Ben

$150... thats only enough to cover fuel getting out, let alone getting back!!

We went out on Sunday chasing dhu's..

Ranged in waters between 16m to 95m.

Hard work finding fish, its not easy to find fish everytime you hit the water!

OT..... Just a tip.

Cleaning the boat is a required part of the deckies job, whether you have chipped in for fuel, bait etc  or not. I can assure you that cleaning the boat is a sh*t of a job and it is expected that all people on the boat are involved with it.

Good luck with cacthing your dhuie but.............. They arent easy to find some times

There is nothing worse than a deckie who doesnt pull his weight!!

Cleaning a boat is made a whole lot easier if everyone jumps in and helps.

Wed, 2009-07-08 15:17

Mate, personally when I go out on someone else's boat I get in there and help with cleaning the boat down, packing this away, cleaning fish, etc.  I consider this part of the trip and quite an enjoyable one that that.  Especially with a coldie in hand.

Wed, 2009-07-08 16:31

I certainly dont mind helping clean other guys boats but when it comes to mine I prefere to give it a clean myself and the other guys can either head home and relax or give me a hand if they want it really dosnt bother me. On the way in you normaly give it a tub up and sort things out as much as you can so when you get home its only a case of a quick hose and she,s done. Theres no point the guys going miles out there way to help me do a 10 minute job.  Also I dont mind guys just meeting me at the ramp in the mornings either as Im happy enough to hook the boat up and head down by myself. Im a big boy and can do it easily haha. How does everyone else feel about deckie duties. I guess the bigger the boat the more help you would need?

Ill agree with ya, your a big boy. Like tapout has said ,it doesnt take long to clean a boat after a days fishing. But usually  i get my deckies to meet me where the tub is stored give me a hand hooking it up to the car, as the jocky wheel is on blocks on a lawn and its pretty heavy by yourself to lift it on and off ,without bustting a valve. then after a days fishing we just top up the fuel used, give it a hose down at my work ,including reels and drop it off and wash the motor out the following day .takes about an extra half hour to fuel and wash down the boat but at least you dont have to wash your tackle when you get home.

Wed, 2009-07-08 19:33

Here's another tip from another Deckie Slut. Dont ask too much for a fishing trip. Nothing is guaranteed. Dont put a price on an outing with fellow members. Yes...chipping in bait, fuel, gear or whatever is part of the etiquette.

Fishing is not all about having to catch a fish, its all about getting out there and enjoying "fishing" itself and the company you're with.

Regarding deckie requirements on my boat...if my fifteen year old son comes along, he does most of the work, including fish cleaning, so I reckon deckies have it pretty easy on my boat!

Thu, 2009-07-09 07:03

I am probably to blame for turning this tread into the way it has gone but I did send my comment with a LOL.

But are the young fellas actually asking or telling.

1.       Take us out hunting Dhuies. (topic)

2.       $150 for both of us as long as we get onto some good fishes (Asking???)

3.       I wouldn’t mind cleaning the boat if I had to. (Great attitude 2nd trip guaranteed)

I know there are a lot of people out there willing to give and good on you all. Me as one volunteer all the time with no reward, however when I read their original thread the points above was what I based my comments on not other members comments.

Guys pm me I fish out of Mandurah. Work away also ambulance Volunteer. See what I can do on my days off weather permitting. “No guarantee” I am willing to pick you up from train station.

I think the boys have been

Wed, 2009-07-08 21:14

I think the boys have been brave to put this up - remember some members are young and $150 can be alot of money for them.

It sounds to me like they just want to have a crack at a dhuie. There are people who have never had the privilege of being on a boat before, or have been on only a handful of times. In that case, they may not understand the proper etiquette of whats going on but this comes through learning and experience. It wasn't too long ago when I first started too!

Boys, at $150, one option is to up the ante just a little bit and hop on a good, respectful honest charter. You wont have to clean the boat or clean the fish.

Good luck!

Take Damo for example - he is a real Captain Bligh - makes me use his rod, smiles when i lose one of his jigs to a bustoff, lets me eat his biscuits and says naff all when i guide his boat onto the trailer at an angle and won't let me share the cleanup - selfish bugger.

Thu, 2009-07-09 11:16

With the great greenbacks you've been getting, I dont think you even need to leave the shore in Kalbarri to get some decent fish, hehe. Though reports of just getting pinkies just off the breakers sounds like a lot of fun, certainly on my list for when i get a boat (though not sure how often i'd be using it if Jakes is pushing out a nice wave :D).

OT, hope you guys get a spot

Thu, 2009-07-09 11:17

OT, hope you guys get a spot and get into some nice fish. I know what its like to not understand any of whats expected or whats normal when deckying. Dont worry, as long as you learn and do what the skipper asks, you'll pick it up. I'm always happy to help out with whats asked, but its figuring out what to do thats not asked thats the hard bit (i'm picking it up slowly, so i've still got a while to go :p).

As for some of the guys in this thread, keep up the constructive criticism Wink
Sometimes people arent aware of how things work, and they wont learn if people arent telling them what they are (hopefully in a nice and constructive tone of course). You might be surprised how much is just a misunderstanding instead of a bad attitude Wink

KEEP TRYING

Thu, 2009-07-09 13:34

guys keep trying and keep up the enthusiasm its the only way i got out in my mates dads boat, the good point is you offered a $ amount up front to indicate what you guys could afford, and that you were serious about running costs,  i thought it was reasonable and this would have given my boat about 140 n/mile range, as for the deckie thing as the others indicated is something you will have to learn by getting out there with different boats in different conditions and then every skipper has different expectations , fishing in boats is great fun, catching is a bonus.  i live NOR will help out if your up this way or can drive

Thu, 2009-07-09 15:25

I don't do deckie work, old fart has his routine, (I hose down the boat while he is cleaning fish) how he likes things cleaned etc, don't worry boys, my son in law is learning very fast how to be a good deckie at the age of 39yrs (and he has on occasions old fished old fart)  But we also clean the boat coming in flush the deck with salt water, scrub the bait board, put the bilge pump on.

and to everyone who has passed on information on what deckying duties may be required.

I know these two young blokes and they are still green when it comes to a few things, but they are really decent young blokes and they are as keen as mustard on fishing and wanting to learn all the time - as they showed in the last Fishwrecked Junior Angler competition.

expectations from a skipper

Thu, 2009-07-09 19:56

expectations from a skipper vary to deckie duties, i know myself i prefer to do most things as i have a routine and do it all on my own anyway when i go out, so not point taking advantage of others, if i need a hand with things i will just say, for me its about letting others who cant get out on a boat experience another sort of fishing that they otherwise wouldnt be able too.

Yep same deal

Fri, 2009-07-10 02:30

I know what i want when i want so i just do it, no problem, your own gear and a bit of fuel money is nice, the rest ill do myself.....

actually now im thinking about it, one time a mate i took didnt take any food or drink, i think he thought it was a charter he was going on or something, had to give him half my subway - we havent been out again.

Wink

edit>  If Im a deckie on someone elses boat however I do what im told, every skippers different as to what they expect. As long as they are clear as to what they want and dont expect you to be a mind reader its all sweet.

If the skippers a tool and wants you to do absolutely everything for him for the whole day and orders you around like his whipping boy I prob wouldnt want to go back on his boat again anyway.

Make up a cardboard sign maybe with "deckie availble" make sure you have a block of mulies and some cash for fuel,,you never know your luck.

very true different skippers

Fri, 2009-07-10 08:24

very true different skippers have different views on what deckeis should do.

Its really onlny a basic few things i think.

Anchor
Bait (if your using bait)
dont move around too much when the skipper is punching out (many times people have fallen over or knocked something over)

and my 1 most important rule.
No smoking next to the skipper :P cant stand the smoke!!!

Oh and no donking sinkers on the side of the boat..big no no.
